Update: Email from my child's teacher regarding President Obama's education speech
My original email to him:

Will you be showing President Obama's speech to your second period class on Tuesday? It begins at 9:00 AM MST, and I want (my daughter) to watch it.

His response came at 8:39, this morning:

I’m not showing the speech. I want to, but the controversy will lead to disruption of the class. I highly recommend that all Americans watch the speech which I’m sure will be shown at other times.

My response:

I brought her home to watch it live and took her back to school, immediately afterward. By the way, all of the right wing bloviating notwithstanding, the speech wasn't even remotely controversial.

He wrote back:

I’m pleased that you and I agree. What’s the controversy? That he wants students to be responsible for their education, stay in school, work hard, graduate, be successful? I’m more controversial than that!!!

I’ve been telling students that from the first day of school, but I don’t say it as nicely as he does. When I listen to those hateful, vengeful, load mouths, I’m ashamed for them and for our country. How does it make us look to the rest of the world. If it wasn’t so cold, I’d move to Canada.

Yay!!! A smart teacher. (Unfortunately, at least a few teachers in the district are wing nuts.) Oh, and I really like the expression "load mouths." I don't know if that was a typo but it rings true because freepturds definitely have a load of something in their mouths but it ain't words.

2. Someone add it to the lexicon.
I'd like to cast some asparagus at the load mouths.

4. A smart teacher?
He weaseled on showing the speech for reasons that have all the substance of a glass of air.

How could "the controversy lead to disruption of the class"? Isn't it his job as the teacher to maintain control of the class?

Sorry, but I'm not impressed by your kid's teacher. Kudos to you for taking your child home to see the speech, but this teacher doesn't sound all that bright, not to mention his unseemly kissing up to you after his voluntarily bending over and not showing the speech...................

...I guess my expectations have gotten low.

11. I know -
it's so easy to end up settling for crumbs.

But that's how people get lazy, and we can't let them get away with it.

We have to hammer them every time, and demand more from them. Their best.

This weasel doesn't deserve anything from you except a lecture.

And KUDOS to you for making sure your kid saw the speech. Well done. :toast:

5. If he was a good teacher, he would have pushed back on the loadmouths.

No one takes a stand in America anymore, except the bullies like the insurance companies.

Sorry, but I'm already discouraged about the fate of healthcare policy here in the U.S. Another matter, yes, but I hate seeing Americans get less and less and less. The stories are so heart-breaking.

12. Wow. Do not show that email to anyone if you want that teacher to keep his job.
He must be young, or new... and hasn't learned to keep his mouth shut and head down yet. Sad, but true. The public schools are no place for bravery. Or even having opinions!

13. Near retirement, tons of tenure, union protection.
I don't intend to reveal him to anyone but he's in good shape, so don't worry. ;)

14. I can vouch for that. Fear of any sort of controversy, especially from the least logical or parents
, was enough to put the kibosh on practically any thing.
