: I wouldn't put Cheney in a league with world-class torturers, but he's getting closer. Paul Van Zyl of the International Center for Transitional Justice makes a case that he's even worse than some well-known authoritarians: "What distinguishes Cheney from Pinochet or Botha is that neither of them ever thought to publicly justify torture. Cheney creates a moral argument for torture. That's a gigantic step back for civilization."
But today, Glenn Greenwald pulls out the flashback machine:
JONATHAN ALTER (11-5-2001): : "In this autumn of anger, even a liberal can find his thoughts turning to... torture. OK, not cattle prods or rubber hoses, at least not here in the United States, but something to jump-start the stalled investigation of the greatest crime in American history. Right now, four key hijacking suspects aren't talking at all.
Couldn't we at least subject them to psychological torture"
Plus, Alter pooh pooh's the public option.
