Because calling them stupid (they are) is as inflammatory as calling them liars (they are) and so using a word that is at once nails them as clowns, asshats and bumblers and their actions as buffoonery gives them the label that defines their circus theatre of the absurd. (That and it will cause an almost unending level of comic gold).
