Labor Day: Why in September?
Does anybody have the reason why we celebrate Labor Day in September, while in many other countries (not just currently or formerly communist countries, either) it's celebrated on May 1st (May Day)?

2. Oh
beat me to it with the link. Basically, In 1894, President Cleveland rushed a bill through congress and signed it into law making Labor Day a federal holiday to smooth things over with Labor just a few days after the disastrous Pullman Strike. It falls in September on purpose, so not as to coincide with the International May day (May 1) since that day already had bad connotations with the Haymarket Riots in Chicago that had fallen around the start of May back in '86.

5. Sadly, it has long ceased celebrating of labor
and is just a three days weekend to note the end of summer.
