Energy saving, 7 year light bulbs - 3 pack /$1.00
Ten dollars for ten three-packs (one dollar for one three-pack) Energy Star bulbs - all sizes. I know how expensive changing over to these bulbs can be. At this price it would be cheaper than buying standard bulbs. I thought those who could benefit from this would like to know.

I found them at:

Albertson's Grocery
25872 Muirlands Blvd
Mission Viejo, CA 92691-4754

The cashier told me that the bulbs were first quality but that they had mistakenly ordered too many. They will be selling them at this price until they sell out. She didn't know if this was being offered in all Albertson's stores or in hers only. I don't have any more information at this point. If you have an Albertson's in your area you might want to call before going in.

(mods: I wasn't sure where to post this. Go ahead and move it if it is a problem here. I am posting it in the Environment/Energy and California forums as well. Thanks.)

1. I have purchased a few Energy Star bulbs from Albertson's in Oklahoma,
and they are better in my opinion than some of the higher priced ones. I've gotten a few more expensive brands that had bulbs with a humming noise, very irritating when installed in a table lamp next to your favorite chair.

The Energy Star bulbs have never had that problem.

That's a great price! Stock up, they are good bulbs.

7. That is great to hear.
I bought 3 packs (9 bulbs) but haven't had a chance to try them yet. I wasn't sure if I should buy more or not.

Is your name in any way connected to Stings song - "They Dance Alone?" Its a haunting melody, I believe about widows of a russian war.

3. A word of caution
The bulbs are great and they last much longer the standard bulbs hence fewer trips up the ladder. But if you experience a power outage or brown out they will glow. Switch them off. This happened to me once and I had to perlace 4.

4. Thanks nykym and welcome to DU
We are converting to flourescent as our bulbs die off. I don't think there is an Albertsons within a thousand miles of here.

5. The song is actually about Chile if I'm not mistaken
Considering the last verses directly indict Pinochet.

Hey Mr. Pinochet
You've sown a bitter crop
It's foreign money that supports you
One day the money's going to stop
No wages for your torturers
No budget for your guns
Can you think of your own mother
Dancin' with her invisible son

9. My name
was supposed to be my password. (I messed up when I was registering.)

Although it does have some meaning to me it is not connected to the song.

I'm going to have to hear the song now, though, to see if there is a connection I didn't know about.

13. Its on his "Nothing like the Sun" CD
and on his Best of "Fields of Gold." Typical Sting production very nicely done and very haunting

8. I'm slowly switching my place to CF bulbs.
They last for years and use a fraction of the power of incandescent bulbs. They're just a little more expensive, but they definitely pay for themselves.

17. I'm really concerned
about the energy/climate crisis. When it comes to switching to energy efficient bulbs I hear reluctance due to the expense. I was hoping to help - especially those who want to change but feel they can't afford to. I hope those people, who live in this area, see this thread.

11. Just remember to put down a towel
or pillow when you switch out these bulbs. Slight toxic mess if you drop them and they happen to break.

14. Wow - this is the first
I've heard of this. You would think that there would be a warning on the package - if only in the small print.

Of course, I am one who played with mercury in my hand, back in the day, before the dangers of mercury were known (or publicized). I am not too freaked out by the idea of cleaning it up properly on my own. But, it would have been nice to have known about the need to do so ahead of time.

16. You're welcome
:hi:

I don't have any confirmation that there is *that* much murcury in these bulbs. Still, better safe than sorry,

18. It's not a total disaster if one breaks.
They only have a tiny amount of mercury in them, so if one breaks, if you open the windows to get rid of the mercury vapor, sweep up the pieces (don't vacuum), you won't have to call hazmat.

20. I agree
A small amount of mercury doesn't worry me. I can see how multiple incidents, handled improperly, might be worrisome, though.

I don't like the fact that I am just hearing about this but I think I can understand why it hasn't been widely publicized, given our society's nature to overreact to every "little" thing. How easily the (minimal) risks could outweigh the advantages of using these bulbs.
