Can some tell me what the F$$$ is going on with heathcare
I just read this post on heath care

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x8626610

"He just wrapped up but reported and I quote "make no mistake President Obama is not walking away from the public option. This will be in the bill." The worst fate that the public option will meet is having a trigger provision but Chuck Todd, MSNBC's chief white house correspondent, just reported that the President is NOT abandoning the public option"

Every day I hear conficting reprots on heathcare. "The public opition is dead" "The oublic opition is not dead." "The president is willing to compromise on the public option ""The President is not walking away from the public option" "The President wants a public option."

Was is really going on can some on enlighten me?

1. Whether or not Obama wants the public option is really not relevant. It can't pass the Senate.
A "trigger" (that says a public option will be instituted automatically if we don't have 95% coverage within a year or two) is a comporomise that might get enough votes in the Senate to pass. That's why you hear talk about it -- not because Obama particularly likes the idea, but becase that might be the best that could come out of the Senate.

6. Yup, that's the deal. Time to get realistic. Just a cold hard fact!
People should not blame Obama but it's understandable that they will. He is totally for the public option and is doing everything he can to gin up support but if the votes are not there here in the 9th inning...they are not there!

8. I blame Obama.
John Edwards warned him: you cannot sit at the table with insurance companies and get a decent reform bill. Obama thought he knew better. The insurance companies sat down at the table with him, and then, just when he thought they were making a deal, the insurance companies doublecrossed Obama and got their extremists out to scream away any kind of intelligent discussion about reform.

Obama has no one to blame but himself. This failure is setting the tone for his entire tenure in office. This is horrible. I am so disappointed.

John Edwards may have his failings, but he spent a full term in the Senate and saw the dirty tricks that were used in the Kerry campaign. Obama ignored Edwards' warnings. Hubris, that is what is bringing Obama down.

9. So accomplishing more in less than a year compared to Bush's 8 is completely irrelevant???
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 01:24 AM by gopsucks1
Including inheriting an incredible mess and doing an incredible job fixing it????????????

I probably also need to remind you that nobody has been able to pass universal healthcare in decades. All this proves is despite his brilliance and political skills Obama is not superhuman.

12. Obama has the majority of voters behind him on the public option.
His problem is not the voters. It's the way he dealt with the insurance companies and how he allowed them to maneuver duplicitously to undermine his efforts while pretending to negotiate with them. The insurance companies have flooded D.C. with lobbyists. They are there to inhibit Obama's efforts. He gave them the room to get in there. His mistake was sitting at the table with the insurance companies to negotiate a deal. His timing was off. He should have lined up his votes and solidified the public support that got him elected behind the basic points of a plan. He should have asked economists to help him calculate the numbers before he encouraged Congress to jump on health care. He just made a terrible mess of it. He did so many things wrong -- in the wrong order -- at the wrong time. It is so sad because the public wants this. In that sense this is the moment. He has failed to seize it.

There is a remote hope that he can regain control with his speech next Wednesday. I'm hoping he will. But I will be surprised if he pulls it off.

13. You know?
I replied to your posts in Political Video forum. And frankly, you don't know what you're talking about. You almost sound like you might be bluffing?

"Cold hard fact"? It was obvious from your statements in PV that you are not aware of any facts at all.

"He is totally for the public option"? Now it's your turn. Post some proof. (you won't find it on freeper public)

14. Of course it could pass the Senate
Through reconciliation- or through arm twisting. Saying that it can't is simply a lie.

3. Here is the deal.
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 12:58 AM by gopsucks1
There are NOT I repeat NOT enough votes for the public option. No way no how. So two things are going on. Obama is trying to mobilize the grassroots and although it is not getting airtime in the main stream media there were hundreds of rallys this week with hundreds of thousands of people coming out. They are also mobilizing people to phone/email their congressmen. So that puts pressure on the no voters. Despite what the GOP and blue dogs are saying publicly MAKE NO MISTAKE, they are feeling the pressure and know how to read polls and know how to read the politics. For every 1 person the reich wing astroturfers get out the REAL grassroots pro-reform turns out 3. All the Congressmen KNOW this. They know the public really wants this.

So now the groundwork is set for trying to get the best deal possible. Public option upfront is not likely. That is just a cold hard fact! But the trigger is because it's hard to defend on a no vote by the GOP. That is because the GOP can't spew their lies about 'socialism' and all that horseshit as easily so kind of forces their hand. They will mostly vote no matter what but all we need is a few.

Yea the trigger is not the best way to go but considering how universal healthcare has been tried and failed to pass for DECADES, getting 75% of what everyone wants is better than nothing. I trust Obama and I know he will not sign anything that does not do decent job of reducing consumer costs and helps keep insurance companies honest. So I am not concerned by the critics saying the trigger is useless and that the insurance industry is gonna make out like bandits. They either don't know what they are talking about, don't know the details, or are just trying to push their agenda.

4. If one of the several bills pass apparently the IRS will administer the outcome
Why this isn't being discussed is astounding

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/Health-care-reform-means-more-power-for-the-IRS-56781377.html

"...if the plan envisioned by President Barack Obama and Congressional Democrats is enacted, the primary federal bureaucracy responsible for implementing and enforcing national health care will be an old and familiar one: the Internal Revenue Service..."

"...In short, health care reform, as currently envisioned by Democratic leaders, would be built on the foundation of an expanded and more intrusive IRS.

Under the various proposals now on the table, the IRS would become the main agency for determining who has an "acceptable" health insurance plan; for finding and punishing those who don't have such a plan; for subsidizing individual health insurance costs through the issuance of a tax credits; and for enforcing the rules on those who attempt to opt out, abuse, or game the system..."

Passing this without debate is...well, maybe you can find a word

11. always blame the messenger not the message, it's a whole lot easier
If the story is true, do you think the IRS should administer the Health Insurance Reform?

And have you read the bill? If not, how do you know it's not true?

If this is true....what do you think?

Substance speaks for itself
