Leafleting HR 676 on a late Summer, Friday night in the gallery district
Around here, once a month, the gallery district is the biggest party going, so we're definitely talking "average white suburban fe/male", though a little on the hip side, mid/late 20s to 60 years old, and his/her girl/boy-friend/spouse and friends, cruising the art, the restaurants and the music.

A conservative estimate of "no" or indeterminant responses to our Medicare-for-All flier would be less than 10% of the people I attempted to give it to, definitely less than 10%, maybe as low as 5%. In addition to this , an interesting number of said "average" white folks were publicly vocal in support of Medicare for All. In appx. 2 hours of handing Medicare-for-all fliers to folk, something like 10 people expressed strong support for the proposal.

The above description was my experience and there were 4 of us out this evening handing out fliers.

1. It's why HR676 doesn't get much coverage
If more people were aware of it and knew what it meant (most of) Congress & Obama couldn't continue to ignore it and go on pretending the bills they're pushing are meant to help anyone but the insurance companies.

3. and once again, a DU'er posts something positive they've done. Something proactive to FIGHT for SP
and another DU'er needs to come along and squash it.

4. That was not my intent
Edited on Fri Sep-04-09 11:56 PM by dflprincess
My intent was to slam the media and the powers that be by pointing out that if they were doing what Patrice had done (educating the public), we'd have enough support for single payer from the public that Obama and the insurance company stooges in Congress would be hard pressed to go on ignoring the need for Medicare for all.

Certainly what Patrice was doing is more valuable than all the calls and emails I've sent to Franken and Klobuchar and even the chats I had with their staffs at the State Fair yesterday and I wish some of us had thought to organize like this and leaflet fair goers - and then pointed them in the direction of the senators' booths.

5. No worries. If that sort of thing bothered me, I would not have been out there in the first place.
We're also marching on our bluedog's office in a week.

Solidarity, KittyWampus!

6. Please read my reply above

I admire what you're doing and wish I'd thought to get a few of us to do the same at the fair this week (always the best place to corner Minnesota politicians).

Again, I meant my point to be that, if the public were being educated about HR676 they'd be behind it as you proved with the response you received.

7. Oh, I know you were not dis-ing our efforts! "that sort of thing" was not meant in reference to
you.

I agree, education is what is needed. That's why I like leafleting; I talk to people and tell them facts the whole time. It's actually kind of fun. Catch people at the right time in the right place and leafleting is a very sociable experience.

2. It bothers me that there's no real central point for Single Payer (Medicare For All)
for support to coalesce.

It'd be nice to see Obama do it, but he isn't.

Kerry said he'd take up the cause for Kennedy. Still waiting.

Anthony Weiner has certainly done a great deal.
