Ed Shouts and Ranti Rhodes
Disclaimer: Warning, theere bye generalizationes ahayde................

I'm loving new discoveries with the online listening and hearing Thom Hartmann and Mike Malloy again.
I've commented here and stand corrected that Ed Shouts has his audience and doesn't need "us" -- we who find him unlistenable.
His audience loves him. Maybe Dems need his shouty approach to reach certain folks.

Tonight I tuned in and OMG what is that noise!
I have listened to Ranti Rhodes in the past, who I find an acquired taste, like Malloy is -- and there's those that can't listen to him either.

Here's my question: is the difference in the personas and the noise they make on air, personal or regional?
Is it a Back East In Your Face Gargling My Words Accent or a Rural Come On Bubba Crack A Beer and Vent accent
that some like and some don't?
The Left Coast Laid Back, Literate, Loquacious Lucidity or the Innercontinental Incisive, Insightful, Inciteful Intellectual voice,
that appeals to others (with overlap)?

I'm asking because the whole world of political discourse has gone completely mad, in both senses.
I can listen to the lucid calm or incitefullectual rants -- but it is impossible to listen
to more of the hateful harangues than the time it takes to change the station.

Ed Shouts and Ranti Rhodes are not hateful -- but they're shouty and angry and edgy as in annoying. Is that a regional thing or what?

Are people more in need of a cathartic radio voice of anger in barking mad times or are people less able to handle even more angry rhetoric?

Thank you.

2. My problem with Rhodes isn't her voice
Her voice is about the only thing she has going for her actually. My problem with her is, like a lot of "radio personalities" that started out as DJs, she has no real education and at the end of the day she's not all that bright. That's the main reason, in my opinion, that she tends to shout at people. Often times when someone calls her she will miss the point of what they are saying entirely, and ends up screaming at a person who is trying to agree with her. I think her hearts in the right place, she's just not too deep.

4. With ya on that. She lost me for the same reason.
I noticed her doing this too, and it got old. I thought it was just for show at 1st, but you might be right- maybe she really is just missing the point!

8. Interesting comments. It seems she does her research so I'd like to be able to listen
and yes I've heard her be mistaken/obnoxious....

I can handle an off the cuff approach and a self educated researcher who knows their stuff.....

Thanks for all the above posts.

I like people who get all worked up an passionate. I like true believers.

I've seen guys at the bar talking about sports or Rock & Roll music the same way Eddie talks about politics-they mean it! In fact, Eddie is a former sportscaster.

I'm Southern, so maybe it is a regional thing.

I like Ed & Thom.

I draw the line at lying and making crap up- and almost all the lefty talkers are good at keeping the facts straight.

12. More good points.
I would like to be able to listen to Ed and Randi and I respect that they have their own audiences and don't need me and others who don't like their sound.

I think he's the type of guy who if the average American listened to on a daily basis would say, "Holy shit, liberals are regular Joes like the rest of us, and they are right."

Randi Rhodes is too much fucking drama. She invites guests on, then talks over them.

15. All that applies
if you're a guy or "regular Joe." 51% of that group aren't male. He's abrasive.

I understand that he has his audience though.

16. Randi Rhodes is, in my book, the only public personality who stammers more then Robert Gibbs.
As a public speaker, I learned early on that thoughtful synapse brings people to the edge of their seats much more than filling the two moments of silence with useless utterances. The first time I heard Randi Rhodes, I was surprised that a radio producer would put someone like that on the air. When I first heard Robert Gibbs, I was shocked that the Obama administration would choose him to be their voice to the world.

I don't think it's a question of region at all.

I'd give my right arm for someone who could make a point without stammering, in that late night FM DJ voice I grew up listening to.

Maybe the left needs someone like Jim Ladd to get the message out. I could (and have), listen to him for hours at a time. And I know he's on our side with both feet, unequivocally.

17. Hal Sparks took over for Stepanie for a week and while I tried I had to dump him.
For a professional actor who seems reasonably intelligent, he used "um" and "ya know" to an absolute distraction.

21. It's the hysterical edge in the voice that's too much
Edited on Fri Sep-04-09 07:52 PM by omega minimo
His fill in came on doing it today. Norm Normalson or whatever. They get themselves all cranked up on whatever and kiss the mic with this shouty, macho, screaming-at-the-football game manic screech that just TOO MUCH.

They don't have to do it all the time. Clearly they think Ed's audience wants that wound up, heads-about-to explode-mania.
