Progressive House leaders to tell Obama to his face: No bill without public option

Via Greg Sargent, the progressives in the House -- the folks who someone in the White House wants to Sister Souljah -- aren't playing games anymore. And, they're not dealing with Rahm Emanuel. They're going right to the President to tell him their position on the public option: They won't support a bill without it. And, they want to tell him to his face:

In a letter delivered to the White House moments ago, the two leaders of the bloc of House progressives bluntly told President Obama that they will not support any health care plan without a public option in it — and demanded a meeting to inform him face to face.

The letter — the first joint statement from progressives since news emerged that Obama might not address the public option in next week’s speech — is their sharpest challenge yet to the president, given the extraordinary sensitivity of this political moment. The letter urges him to mention the public option in his speech.

So, we know Obama has met with the Blue Dogs to discuss health care. And, he spent an evening in early August with the "Gang of Six." Both of those groups tend to undermine Obama's agenda. Will he meet with the Congressional Progressive Caucus? This is a group that actually shares Obama's vision and supports him on the issues. So, we look forward to hearing about this meeting, when and if it happens.

September 3, 2009

The Honorable Barack Obama President of the United States of America

1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW

Washington, D.C.

Dear President Obama:

Thank you for continuing to work with Members of Congress to draft a health reform bill that will provide the real health care reform this country needs. We look forward to meeting with you regarding retaining a robust public option in any final health reform bill and request that that meeting take place as soon as possible.

Public opinion polls continue to show that a majority of Americans want the choice of a robust public plan and we stand in solidarity with them. We continue to support the robust public option that was reported out of the Committees on Ways and Means and Education and Labor and will not vote for a weakened bill on the House Floor or returning from a Conference with the Senate.

Any bill that does not provide, at a minimum, a public option built on the Medicare provider system and with reimbursement based on Medicare rates-not negotiated rates-is unacceptable. A plan with negotiated rates would ensure higher costs for the public plan, and would do nothing to achieve the goal of providing choice and competition to keep rates down. The public plan with set rates saves $75 billion, which could be lost if rates are negotiated with providers. Further, this public option must be available immediately and must not be contingent upon any trigger.

Mr. President, the need for reform is urgent. Every day, 14,000 Americans lose their health care coverage. We must have health care reform that will effectively bring down costs and significantly expand access. A health reform bill without a robust public option will not achieve the health reform this country so desperately needs. We cannot vote for anything less.

We look forward to meeting with you to discuss the importance of your support for a robust public plan, which we encourage you to reiterate in your address to the Joint Session of Congress on Wednesday.

Sincerely,

Co-Chairs Lynn Woolsey Raul Grijalva

9. How smart is it to negotiate with entities or individuals who's sole purpose is
to sabotage you, or worse, no matter what you do? No matter what..you do??

I'm glad the real Democrats are putting their foot down.

The President should care about looking weak and centrist/corporatist to the majority of Democrats.

and btw, GO KEITH!!!

16. I am a precinct chair in Tarrant County, TX
we were Pink last election and on the verge of turning Blue.

We are actively recruiting precinct chairs for empty spots for the Party in our County.

I fear very much, if there is no public option, any momentum we have built will be gone...
and recruitment will be harder.

At our last meeting, it seemed that everyone there was for a public option.
These are Democrats in Texas. Do the Party heads not know that we are working our butts off?
Do they even care that they might be cutting us off at the knees?

17. Change has happened, with the American people!!
We have changed. For 8 long years laws were passed to erode our civil rights, and this has been the status quo. We have to teach our government now that they have to change along with us, no longer can they pass laws without our consent. We have awaken.

***America has changed!! The Bush years of dictatorial rule are over!!*****
