Cat Needs Meow Lessons.
http://www.poetrywar.com/Music/cat!!.jpg

An exploding family. Meth. Stolen car. Lost job. Eviction.

Two cats, inconsequential, unconsidered, invisible.

Once loved, but the kids are gone now. Poof.

The older cat disappears. Poof. The younger one scurries, a little freaked out in the empty space with the empty bowl. She has the ugliest meow I’ve ever heard, screechy and grating.

Nulls in the equation. The shelters are triple-booked these days. And thus the Compass directs me — I don’t have to save the world; but that which crosses my path, EVERYTHING THAT CROSSES MY PATH UNTIL I DIE, gets Byronized, somehow.

Thus Isabella the Hippo becomes My Own Personal Cat.

The big black Sisters Of No Mercy (my dogs) do not approve.

Still. She CROSSED MY PATH.

Meow lessons.

1. She crossed your path ...
They'll do that sometimes. It's like they know you're there, the one who won't get away. The vulnerable one - the one who falls for the screeching/grating meow.

They aggravate the Sisters of Mercy - and delight in the doing.

They tear up your best drapes, pee on your favourite T-shirt, throw up God-knows-what on your best silk tie - the one you were wearing to that important job interview, now ruined - AND now you're late.

And then they give you "that" look one day - it's fleeting and a bit self-conscious. That look that says, "If you ever repeat this to another living soul, I will deny all knowledge of it - and I'll scratch your eyes out in the bargain."

But it's that look that says, "Thanks. I owe you one."

And once you've shared that look, there's no turning back.

You belong to each other, plain and simple.

And all because she crossed your path ... just like she was meant to do.

10. You've evidently been there and done that.
Not the tie!

2. it wasn't the meow that got us, it was the pained jade green eyes
barely looking over the cat pan in the cage at the pound. And the fact that this furbaby was so frightened and curled into itself that the pound mistakenly labeled her a HIM. The fear, and the exhaustion were palpable.

Two years later we have a house diva, who doesn't meow all that often, but she has an odd purr - it sounds like 2 different octaves at once. We've dubbed it the double-barreled purr. And she runs the house, at least at feeding times. All other hours she's lounging in a sunny window.

Those furry little hearts are the best, even when you're not expecting them.

16. Your description of her purr sounds like she hung out in a lamasary in a previous life!

4. The dog we have now walked up to us in a parking lot with missing claws
and skin ripped off the bottom of his jaw, and with obvious signs of abandonment (rabies and owner info clipped off of a collar).

He has turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to us. Totally cool, totally aware.

I'd cross his path a million times.

6. Glad that was a lucky synchronicity
The doggie meeting you just when you both needed each other (Though you hadn't realized your need yet.)

Sometimes Godddess is in her heaven and all turns out okay in her world.

12. All our kitties have been rescue kitties. Some of them have had
Incredible back stories.

Like little Gracie, whose original parents abandonned their home, and left her locked in the empty house without so much as a bowl of food or water. For six weeks! (Maybe she ate insects to survive? We have never figured out how she did it.)

Neighbor saw her in the window and finally called The Marin Cat Connection lady, Anne. (Anne has been a saint to animals and humans both.)

We took in Gracie and didn't see her for six weeks. Except every other day or so I'd capture her and then syringe milk down her gullet. She was just too scared to come out and eat normally.

On the seventh week, M. said: "This is not like having a pet. Maybe we should send her back. She isn't getting better."

The kitty came out from behind the couch at that exact moment and stood under his arm so he could pet her. She started being sociable on a regular basis and improved greatly. By the time our house was for sale, some 3 yrs later, she would help the realtors show the property, having finally understood people can be nice.

5. That's great for Isabella and you and the Sisters
and the meow lessons should work.
I once got a cat at the humane society. She had the sweetest meow in her cage - then - on the ride home she let out her real meow! A monotone kind of New York accent that seemed to say - not good enough - fix it right now.

As time went on, she used that meow less and started talking more. Whew! Hope the same for you.

8. She's adorable
She has such gorgeous eyes.

As someone who took in two cats who crossed our path, trust me that you won't regret it.

14. I found a puppy on a porch buried under a bunch of stuff the neighbors did not want when they moved
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 12:59 PM by EndersDame
I gave her a little bit of food and water and hoped she would not follow me . She did. Even up stairs that were almost too big for her to climb. We tried to adopt her out but she kinda grew on us even though my very old cats do not like having a strange toddler at the house

15. Bless you for taking in Isabella
The dogs will get used to it. If the cat was around all that meth, you may want to get her to a vet and checked out (a shelter can probably get you to a reasonably cheap one). Again, blessings for what you did.
