... whenever I have computer issues. Why couldn't they just make it so that if there is no end tag, the beginning tag is ignored completely? (Note to Elad: I'm not suggesting that DU needs to write this into their code - it's just an illustration of how computers could be making life easier.)

By the way, you're not the first one that has had an issue with using square brackets in quoted material resulting in unintended html, and I'm sure you will not be the last. Quite frequently people don't even realize why it is happening. For example:
