Parents react to school board member's party pics on Facebook
Parents react to school board member's party pics on Facebook

"Wow that's ridiculous," said one parent. "I think it shows pretty bad judgement."

Parents across the Schenectady School District are speaking out in shock at the news of school board member James Casino, and his wife Donna, a sixth grade school teacher, hosting a party with alcohol, in honor of their son Jim, a recent high school graduate.

The Casino's were pictured at the party, with other minors, drinking alcohol. The pictures later surfaced on-line showing Donna Casino being hoisted, head-first, by her son and his friends, with her head in a keg of beer. James is seen slurping liquor from a block of ice.

Parents in the community say it's not only a poor representation of the Casino's, but also the school district.

"I'm a mother of three. I don't serve my kids alcohol or drink it myself. I don't want people who are supposed to be attending to my children serving their kids alcohol," says one mother.

And for those parents with children in the school system, they now fear for their kids safety at school. And say if the charges are proven true, the Casino's should be out of a job.

4. Geez....if they behave like that at work, then there's a problem
But what they do at home is their own damned business.

Now, they may get some trouble for having minors drinking at their home, but that doesn't seem to be something that they should be fired over.

And as to the "fear" for their children's safety at school, GMAFB!!!

I'm the mother of three boys, but I can't imagine being that tight assed.

Of course, I was tremendously amused to be out at a PTO function (a parents' night out) and seeing the two Kindergarten teachers totally wasted! They were too funny, but I still let my kids go to school and have one of them as a teacher. Oh man, I'm a bad mom now!

5. "with alcohol" ... "drinking alcohol" ... "serving their kids alcohol"
Sheesh! They make it sound like STERNO! Straight rubbing alcohol ... or moonshine. It's fucking BEER!

:eyes:

I sure don't condone parents supporting a drunken orgy of minors, but the idea that eighteen-year-olds drinking beer is some slide down Skid Row alcoholism is just fucking tabloid sensationalism.

drunk.

you are mad at the parents that want to be able to send kids to end of school year party hosted by a teacher and school board member with the expectation that their kids will not be served booze?

this is too high of an expectation for a parent to have for another parent?

fuck responsibility in this free for all no expectation world

11. Not really - Jaeger has a special sale on now.
It's like 5 quarts of the booze SOLD in an ice luge.

Not much more preparation than a simple trip to the liquor store (I've seen them in my local, fwiw).

a "kid", either.

I'm not justifying the parents' judgment- I think it was bad. But let's be real. These weren't grade-schoolers getting drunk, they were basically college students.

Am I to take it you never drank in college?

13. No, let's just stop pretending it's about "kids"
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 01:28 PM by Warren DeMontague
Underage, yes. Bad judgment, probably. However, there is a strain of thought that says it's more sensible to let your ADULT offspring party under your nose, where you can keep them from, say, getting behind the wheel, than to pretend that somehow they're not going to touch any alcohol at age 18, 19, 20.

Which is sort of like pretending that they're never going to have sex until they're married.

which is ANOTHER "good ole repug argument", thank you very much.

19. It would appear these parents were under the influence themselves.
How would that affect their ability to keep a kid from getting behind the wheel?

I've known of quite a few barn parties out here. Adults chaperoning underage drinking but all keys were confiscated at arrival, everyone stayed the night in the barn and no adults were drinking.

31. I think it's realistic to acknowledge that 18, 19, 20 yr olds do things like drink & have sex.
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 02:02 PM by Warren DeMontague
I certainly did at that age, and don't regret it, either.

And while a 20 yr. old may not be legal to drink in most states, certainly I think it's stretching the definition to call them a "kid". By most yardsticks, college students are adults.

Doesn't mean I think that the parents should have pictures on facebook getting plastered with them, but let's not pretend that this is about fourth graders.

37. Seriously.
You should see the uptight moms on message boards I frequent when I mention that I will allow my kids a taste of wine with dinner when they are older. it's what is done in my husband's home country. They practically already want to report me to CPS for showing my kids that wine goes with food. I don't condone getting your kids drunk or serving liquor to other minors, but some parents are so uptight about even a drop of wine in this country. All while they pop Xanax like it's candy.

The only pictures they show are of the parents drinking.

And what's with these complainers? You telling me they've never been to a Bar-B-Q or Super Bowl party that had kids and alcohol? :eyes:

36. The guy is a member of the school board, fer cryin' out loud...
...if he doesn't have enough sense to at least show a little discretion and not publish pictures of himself and his wife hosting a party where minors are drinking, then he deserves the backlash.

Mind you: I think it is entirely unrealistic to expect 18-year-olds not to try alcohol. And I also think parents may be wise to host a party and supervise rather than letting their teens just go and do it on their own (which they will undoubtedly do).

But for goodness' sake, whatever happened to common sense? Why would a school board member, who must be aware of (a) the laws and (b) the concerns of parents, post pictures like that? Very poor judgment, and that is enough IMO to cause some concerns. Now depending on how wild the party was, and it sounds like it may have been a bit wild, then the other concerns are also legitimate IMO.
