Former first daughter Jenna Bush joins `Today'

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

(08-30) 10:16 PDT NEW YORK, (AP) --

NBC's "Today" show has hired someone with White House experience as a new correspondent — former first daughter Jenna Bush Hager.

Hager, a 27-year-old teacher in Baltimore, will contribute stories about once a month on issues like education to television's top-rated morning news show, said Jim Bell, its executive producer.

The daughter of former President George W. Bush said she has always wanted to be a teacher and a writer, and has already authored two books. But she was intrigued by the idea of getting into television when Bell contacted her.

1. A teacher? Wow. If all her students get Ds and Fs, will she be held accountable?
Going on a fluffy show like 'Today', don't teachers have to do a lot of grading and other work?

2. Is she actually a teacherr?
Or is she a "teacher" like her mother was a "librarian": i.e., did a term or two than went on to greener pastures?

26. Her book "Ana's Story" is actually very good and she wrote it.
I've listened to a couple of interviews she did and, being a writer myself, it's obvious from her account of the writing process that it's her own work.

http://www.amazon.com/Anas-Story-Journey-Jenna-Bush/dp/0061379093/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1251667395&sr=8-3

Description

Ana’s story begins the day she is born with HIV, transmitted from her mother, who dies just a few years later. From then on, Ana's childhood becomes a blur of secrets—about her illness, her family, and the abuse she endures. Shuffled from home to home, Ana rarely finds safety or acceptance. But after she falls in love and becomes pregnant at seventeen, she embarks on a journey that leads her to new beginnings, new sorrows, and new hope.

Based on her work with UNICEF and inspired by the framework of one girl's life, Jenna Bush tells the story of many children around the world who are excluded from basic care, support, and education. Resources at the back of this book share how you can help children like Ana and protect yourself and others.

I like Jenna Bush. I saw her interviewed a few times about her work with under privileged children. There was something very genuine and endearing about her and I wish her all the best.

35. Yeah, right. It will be so wonderful one day when every tv news show and newspaper only
hire people with ZERO training and experience to work at their NEWS outlets.

Yeah! Can't wait! Maybe Meghan McCain can take over the Meet the Press anchor job? Oh wait, I think Luke Russert has an in on that one!!

Maybe Bristol Palin will start writing a column for the New York Times?

It seems all one needs these days to land a spot on TV news or writing a political column is a well-known parent!!!

Forget merit, know-how, paying your dues, etc. This is great! Just because your Dad was President you can do anything. Who knows what's next for Jenna.....space??

Or she can do a special on her father..."what the fuck was W thinking..." just like the Matt Loser feature.

I wonder if they'll get Anheiser-Bush as a sponsor...

10. Don't forget her literary chops
"has already authored two books"

Here are excerpts from unbiased reviews of "Read All About It," written for K-3rd grade readers.

"I like when Tyrone sees the pig. That's cool." -- George B.

"While some pre-literates may enjoy the fantasy of pigs that come to life, I think the little bastard Tyrone should have been strung up his giblets and sent off to Uzbekistan. I mean, he looks like some kind of troublemaker." -- Dick C.

19. He wasn't a manager, just an investor.
He had a 2% interest in the team, from what I remember. They gave him some honorary duties, which I suspect he pawned off on someone else. I think he was in charge of 'bat day' at one point. What they really wanted him for was political. They needed a new stadium and had to get some property condemned so they could take it for the 'public good'.

24. Close enough.
You're right about the manager thing. I was just tossing off titles. He was "owner" for a while. The deal was political. They got the land; rove got to say that bush was a big time business man. He no more had anything to do with the business of the team than he did with his oil companies. My point was that he got the stock for promises and was repaid millions for nothing. I likened it to daughter getting a job that she is not qualified for simply because of her family name. How many other charter school teachers is NBC setting up beside Matt on national television?

17. Here's a setup I'd go for:
Four personalities, all the offspring of bigtime republicans.

In one corner, Liz Cheney and Jenna Bush.

In the other corner, Ron Reagan and Stephanie Miller.

Party your way through college, work a year, then land a cushy, high-paying job. All while the rest of us work our asses off for twenty years, after going living hell in grad school, get laid off and can't find ANY new job for months on end. Nice. Of course, our daddies weren't President...

Good thing we're told America is a meritocracy or people might actually take offense to this.

If Kathie Lee Gifford can get a job on television, I don't see why Jenna Bush shouldn't. The interviews she's given haven't been train wrecks.

Edited on Sun Aug-30-09 05:37 PM by rvablue
I have little doubt there are many, many out-of-work, trained and experienced journalists who would do a wonderful job of adding to the discourse and reportage about education.

Jenna Bush, however, will not.

If you think this is a good or fair or honest pick, then maybe NBC should hire Meghan McCain to anchor Meet the Press and maybe Bristol Palin should become the Supreme Court correspondent for ABC.

Oh, that's right! That would be a ridiculous idea.
