Volunteers List - Carry the Torch (crosspost from Activist HQ)
Since we are all so moved by the service and dedication of the Kennedy family, and want to DO something to honor the legacy of a true Liberal…
Here is a list of volunteer search engines to get us started. Let’s answer the call that our President issued at the beginning of the summer…for EVERYONE to volunteer in some way, shape or form. That each of us can make a huge difference by making a small effort in our own communities.
We got sidetracked by the RW hate machine for a while, let’s choose to take the higher path & “answer to our better angels” by REALLY creating change in lives and communities – one at a time.

I am looking for a job, as many of you are…is it too much to give 6 months of your skills? If we each signed up for these programs, the needs of many could be met, we would be able to stay on top of our game and add something cool to the resume, and many times there is a stipend or other assistance with childcare costs, living allowance, etc...…so perhaps it could even help you if you are on unemployment or assistance…

Good luck! Keep the Dream Alive!

1. I already serve.
I spend my own unpaid time, and my own funds, to meet the needs of my students.

For example, I've already put in 17 unpaid days this summer, and have spent about $700 so far in 2009 on classroom related materials.

In the face of the teacher-bashers, here at DU, and across the rest of the nation.

In addition, here are some things I'm willing to do to keep a liberal dream alive:

I will not vote for any candidate who is not clearly left of center.

I will not vote for, donate to, or campaign for, any candidate who does not clearly and consistently ACT left of center on issues.

I will campaign to defeat the efforts of union-busters, privatizers, and corporate stooges at every turn.

I will lobby for the end of war, for universal, single-payer, not-for-profit health care, for abolishing NCLB, vouchers, charter schools, merit pay, and every authoritarian privatization attempt on public education.

I will continue to oppose NAFTA/CAFTA in any way that I can.

I will continue to work for, in whatever ways I can, election reform that includes 100% public financing and IRV.

Of course, I've already been doing these things, as well.

I think I'm adequately doing my part to create change.

2. THANK YOU!
I am so glad we have you on our side! Your efforts are commendable and a shining example to many of us...

I have worked at the local Boys&Girls Club, and done alot of volunteer work at my church as well...this is not easy since I am usually the one on the "need" end of life, being a single mom and survivor of Domestic Violence

I hope in Honor of Sen. Kennedy we can stir up more activism on all levels!

7. It would be nice to hear fellow DUers' experiences...
I used to be a Junior Volunteer (aka candy striper) at the local hospital all through High School and really enjoyed and learned alot. sometimes just sitting in a patients room and shooting the breeze was all that was needed...sometimes it was offering humor and support to the exhausted nurses...

Boys & Girls Club really taught me more about how many of our kids are "lost" because they have no parentla support due to the hardships single parent familes face...even those families where both parents work 3 jobs just to stay alfoat. The kids needed someone to read with them and take interest in them. we actually worked on story ideas and published a newsletter for a semester...
