Ted campaigned for Brooke's opponents VERY reluctantly.

4. Brooke was more liberal than his opponent in 1972
and got my very last vote for a Republican.

Tsongas ran against him in 1976 after Brooke had been mired in a nasty divorce and won.

In 1980, Reagan appeared and handed the GOP over to a coalition of the very rich and the very stupid. There was no way any Republican would ever get another of my votes after that. Pressure to vote with the party was simply too great, no matter how liberal the candidate was.
