Florida, where it's legal to beat your kids as long as you aren't gay.
In criminal court, prosecutors dropped a child abuse case against a man named Loscar Rodriguez, a father, who decided that a good belt lashing would teach his 8 year old son to get better grades. Did the boy get better grades? Not sure, but he did get raised welts on his leg and backside, bruises big and purple enough to alarm a teacher, and a butt that hurt him to sit upon.

At the same time, across town at the District Court of Appeals, a man named Frank Gill fought to protect his status as the father of two boys he first fostered then adopted. He and his partner had taken in the two young brothers who had known no other healthy family, and were eventually called exemplary fathers and family, but the state is appealing the adoption because Gill is gay.

1. I still have a few friends in Florida where I lived for 15 years but I refuse to
go even to visit them. They come here because I won't set foot in that goofy state ever again.

2. goofy as compared to Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia?
Let's be honest. There are quite a few states that could be labeled as "goofy".

3. Well, I now live in Iowa which accepts same-sex marriage but you're right,
there are plenty of goofy states. California could qualify under many criteria too.

5. Remember that cartoon where Bugs Bunny just sawed off Florida and let it float away?
Every time I hear another Florida story, and they're all bad or loony, I think of that cartoon, and wish it were possible.

14. Except that some people actually like living where they do and have no intention to move....

...and they don't take well to other people having desires that the place they live simply floats away, no matter how ridiculous the premise is.

8. Trolls are unrec'ing this.

Thankfully, it hit 5 recs on the GP before they tried to vote it off the island. At least two people unrec'd, so I'm more than happy to cancel out one of those homophobic, pro-child abuse votes.

13. States rights. Isn't this what our own President encourages?
When will the federal government make this right?
