Tahoe Girl, Missing For 18-Years, May Be Alive
Jaycee's stepfather tells CBS13 that the FBI says they have people responsible for her disapperance.

South Lake Tahoe (CBS13) ― A possible break in the 1991 kidnapping case of an 11-year-old girl from South Lake Tahoe. A woman showed up in Contra Costa County yesterday, claiming to be Jaycee Lee Dugard, who has been missing for 18 years.

This morning, Dugard's mother, Terry Probyn is flying to Northern California from her home in Southern California to meet with the woman who claims to be her missing daughter.

CBS13 spoke with Dugard's stepfather Carl Probyn late Wednesday and Thursday morning, who says the FBI facilitated a phone call between the woman in Concord and Dugard's mother Terry who now lives in Riverside County. According to Carl Probyn, this woman walked into a Bay Area police station identifying herself as Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was 11-years-old at the time of her disappearance.

"The FBI did tell us they have Jaycee and the people that did this," said Probyn.

Jaycee's mother told Carl that she is 90% sure this woman is her daughter and that she remembers things about her past.

4. My Mom lives in Tahoe and knew the family --
I think I have to wake her up and tell her the news! If this is true -- :wow:

How many other kidnapped children are out there, alive today but perhaps not remembering what happened to them or still unable to break free???

It's wonderful news. I hope there are others out there like her....it's hard to think of the alternative :-(.

6. HOLY Crap!
I wonder when the press conference is?
I live in Tahoe and have kids
Because of this case, we are all constantly reminded that "it can happen here too" when it comes to children and abduction.

wow...this is amazing...

The article speaks of another case they thought was related, I remember the news revisiting the case here back in 2003 again as well - and Jaycee's mom saying that, against all odds, she still had the 'feeling' that Jaycee might be alive somewhere... mother's intuition or false hope?

wow, just wow...

My Mom lives just a few blocks from the Y -- I am heading up for the weekend, in fact. :hi: She is a member of the Tahoe Choir and does volunteer work around town. She feels like the lone Dem in a very red area. :)

7. Amazing
I can't begin to imagine the torture her mother has gone through. Trying to somehow move on, yet still hoping.

We have a vacation home at Tahoe and I remember seeing the missing posters for Jaycee for many years. My daughter was particularly affected by seeing Jaycee's smiling face on the posters; they are about the same age.

I truly hope this woman is really Jaycee and that she isn't too messed up.

8. I hope it's her.
I lived in Tahoe for awhile several years after the dissappearance. People still talked about it, signs were still up. It would be nice for the the people of what is in fact a small, tight-knit local community to get some closure.

21. Why the skepticism and the racial thing?
I don't get it. I'm sure she's going to tell why it took so long. Maybe she didn't know how to contact her parents or was afraid. I can think of many reasons.

How about just being glad?

33. It's a running thing with the media.
It seems to keep stories about Bush admin acts filtered from the public. This time while more reports about the CIA abuses slowly trickle out, drip drip drip.

24. It can take 20 or more years to speak up about childhood sexual abuse & this one was KIDNAPPED too
Good lord.

That young man (Steven Stayner) who finally left his abductor only did so because another little kid who got snatched was so miserably unhappy that he just knew he didn't want that kid to be as sad as he had been. His captor had told him over and over that his parents gave him away. He never got over the experience, either.

When a child is abused, especially over a long period of time, they don't just miraculously become psychologically healthy adults when they turn 21. If ever.

Hekate

13. This will be easy enough to verify.
They have Jaycee's dental records. Also, there was a chicken pox mark between her eyes and a birthmark on her right arm.

I belong to The Doe Network. We compare missing person reports with John/Jane Does looking for possible matches.

I have looked for Jaycee many times. I sure hope it's her.

30. So do I...
Please remember that it is very difficult for these kids to get away from their abductors. Just look at Elizabeth Smart or Shaun Hornebeck, both are miracles. Elizabeth was gone for 9 months and when she was asked if she was Elizabeth Smart she denied it as she was still with her abductors. She denied right up to the time she saw her parents. she had been sexually abused that whole time. Shaun Hornebeck was held for 4 years and was found only because Ben Ownby had been abducted and a witness was able to describe the truck the abductor was driving. Shaun had been sexually abused that whole time and threatened with death, even enduring being strangled at one point. Please lets not judge these kids, they would do anything to survive their ordeal.

22. I wonder if the stepdad will get an apology
I asked this in the LBN thread, but that one dropped like a rock.

The stepdad was all but charged with her kidnapping and murder, and even local papers ran articles accusing the guy of getting away with murder. He saw the kidnapping, was the last person to see her alive, so everybody drew the natural conclusion...that he'd killed her, dumped the body, and made up the kidnapping story as a cover. A big part of the family moving to SoCal supposedly had to do with escaping ongoing harassment from neighbors who considered him a killer.

I'm glad to see that the girl is doing well, and its good to see the stepdad exonerated.

31. No apology could ever be enough for this, there will be no "justice" for the stepdad,
only the peace he has from this resolution that proves his innocence. Perhaps he and his estranged wife can get back together, at least they would have that. No "good" outcomes for any concerned, but certainly better than what they all had.

I lived right by St. Joseph Minnesota when a 10 or 11 year old boy was supposedly abducted and has never been seen since, 20 years ago. We know he's a full grown man if he's still alive but referring to him as a kid or an adolescent as he was when he went missing isn't disrespectful as far as I can tell.

editing,

his name is Jacob Wetterling I never knew him but I did run into his parents a few times.

A parole agent's questioning of 58-year-old Phillip Craig Garrido led to the discovery of Dugard, who was 11 years old when she was abducted 18 years ago in the El Dorado County community of Meyers, officials said. Dugard turned 29 on Thursday.
