GOP Congresswoman: Party Looking For "Great White Hope"
GOP Congresswoman: Party Looking For "Great White Hope"
Eric Kleefeld | August 26, 2009, 10:56PM

The Topeka Capitol-Journal reports that freshman Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) told a town hall meeting a week ago that the GOP still had to find a "great white hope."

***"Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope," said Jenkins. "I suggest to any of you who are concerned about that, who are Republican, there are some great young Republican minds in Washington." As examples, Jenkins mentioned Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI).

Jenkins' spokeswoman Mary Geiger told the paper that Jenkins' remark was not meant to refer to "race, creed or any background." Said Geiger: "There's no doubt the Republican Party has gone through some dark and challenging times in recent years, but thankfully bright young leaders have stepped up to lead the party into the future and she hopes to be a part of it. That was the intent of her comments -- nothing more and nothing less. Congresswoman Jenkins apologizes for her choice of words."

15. I admit it.
Back then I rooted for Cooney, partly because he was a white guy. But then I always rooted against Scott LeDoux and he was white. I enjoyed seeing Larry Holms beat the stuffing out of him. Then Ledoux whined about it being a TKO beacause of a thumb to the eye. Holms hit him in the right eye with about 50 right hand jabs. Ledoux always held his right too low to block anything.

30. That isn't Cooney vs Holmes,
which was the fight that had the real racial tensions. And, to be fair, Gerry was not the person responsible for the "White Hope" bit. He didn't like it, and it made him very uncomfortable.

Cooney was a good fighter. In the above photo, he's being KOed by a great heavyweight -- something that happened to almost everyone who fought this fellow.

26. No doubt about it...
but, he paid the price. From the article I posted...

THE FORMER heavyweight boxer Jerry Quarry, who twice fought Muhammad Ali and lost two title bouts, died on Sunday at the age of 53 after a long descent into dementia brought on by repeated blows to the head, according to his niece.

Quarry died at Twin Cities Hospital in Templeton in central California. He was admitted yesterday with pneumonia but his niece, Sheri Coolbagh, said that had been brought on by dementia pugilistica, which is brain damage caused by blows to the head.

The man had heart.

32. back then we called nickles 'bees'
cause they had a picture of a beehive on 'em
'gimme five bees for a quarter,' we'd say
anyway, i was wearing an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time
you couldn't get a nice white onion, cause of the war
so i made do with a yellow one
what were we talking about? oh yeah, the irishman
the ones that didn't go off to war, we ran outta town
hanged more than a few
jerry quarry was the first irishman to come to our town since before the depression
when he punched his way through our barricades, we gave him the key to the city
welp, gotta be on my way

34. Jerry Quarry was not a "chump."
He was a small heavyweight, who today would be competing in the cruiserweight division. At his best, he beat everyone his own size. He also beat some of the top bigger men of his day, including handing the first defewats to two of the top undefeated prospects in his era. But he had the luck of the Irish, in the sense that he fought during an era when three of the heavyweight division's all time greats fought -- Ali, Frazier, and Foreman. He fought both Ali and Frazier twice, and in three of those fights took terrible punishment.

Quarry made a sad attempt at a comeback at an older age, and took more unnecessary punishment. He also battled with addiction, and it was the combination of punches and white powder/alcohol that destroyed his brain. There was a genetic component, as his brother Mike (who only took serious punishment in one fight, from a single left hook from the great Bob Foster), died the same sad way.

Quarry was a good and decent man outside of the ring, when he was sober. He came from a rough family life, in which a combination of disease and injury had convinced a series of doctors that he would never be able to get out of a wheel chair.

My brothers and I were close friends with his brother-in-law, and one of my brothrs knew Jerry pretty well. He was a good man. As a fighter, he certainly could compete with any cruiserweights, from any era. And, in many eras, he would have been the heavyweight champion. He was in no sense a "chump."

49. So true...I remember him taking Earnie Shavers apart in the Garden.
I think it was 73...one round. This was after Shavers had just knocked Jimmy Ellis out earlier that year in one round(I was at that fight). Quarry was like a buzzsaw that night and he also beat Ron Lyle in either the Garden or the Felt Forum around that same timeframe.

50. In all seriousness, Quarry was not a chump at all
The man really did have the heart of a lion. I was just an absolute fanatic Ali fan back then. To us Ali fans, everyone else was a chump!

Nice to know some of the personal things you mention about Quarry. And you're quite right. In another day and age, he would have been champ.

After all he is Jewish and when talking in this racist way, Jews are not white.
