Hillary's going to Rutgers to talk to the basketball team
Edited on Thu Apr-12-07 03:59 PM by NightWatcher
from CNN.
oh my god, this shit has gone way the hell too far.

from her website

When our children are young, we teach them to dream big and reach for the stars, and that if they work hard enough they can accomplish anything.

This year the Rutgers women's basketball team defied the odds and lived up to their dreams, providing inspiration to every little boy and girl beginning to pick up a ball or open a book. These remarkable young women reached the pinnacle of success and won the hearts of basketball fans everywhere with their grace, skill, and poise. They are role models deserving our praise -- and our support.

Don Imus's comments about them were nothing more than small-minded bigotry and coarse sexism. They showed a disregard for basic decency and were disrespectful and degrading to African Americans and women everywhere.

Please join me in sending the young women of Rutgers a message of respect and support. Show them that we are proud to stand with them and for them

12. Now, WHICH character trait of a President is she trying to demonstrate?
Really? Considering all the pain inflicted on millions of people everyday, do we want our next President to visit each victim? That can't work.

So is this good judgement? Does this work for the US, for the victims, or just her campaign?

The only question left is to whether or not she will meet in person with the players, or if she will only exploit them from, and speak to them from, the podium.

to rampant sexism in her career, that Hillary share her experience with the victims of this disgusting commentary. None of the male candidates would be appropriate. This was not just racist but sexist. I am noy t a hugge Hillary fan but this is a good thing. No white male political leader will stand up and call out the sexism. Only black men Sharpton, Jackson and Obama have really addressed the dual issue.

NBC is working really hard to focus the discussion on the racism - and avoid the sexism. Could be because the majority of the U.S. population is female.

Senator Clinton has to step in because the self-satisfied pasty white men who run the national dialog on the tv are avoiding the issue.

Go Hillary !

Note: Add all the sexist males on DU to the problem.

38. If they were white women nothing would have been said about them.
If they were black men something equally disturbing would have been said about them

This tells me the sexism quotient (vs. racism) is very small.

It was a racist remark.

People of all races should be outraged at this remark. In fact I think the 2 Revs. should stand down and let parents take over. You don't have to be black to be appalled by this crude remark. More white men should be speaking out. What if was their daughters being called ho's. My daughter received a 4 year scholarship in sports and if this had been her team I would be even more disgusted. By the way she is now a 3rd grade special ed. teacher and has 3 kids of her own. Girls should be encouraged not put down.

some fall hook line and sinker for thought process being dealt out on a daily basis via live media etc that someone should be hated, bottom line, if she gets the nomination she gets my vote, we all need to deal with that and if you like another candidate by all means work for thier campaign but in the end, learn to stand behind the winner, this country needs change and like it or not, Hillary though some view her as DLC represents a change.

There's never been a candidate with her negative approval numbers elected. She may be the first, but there's a lot more at stake to risk it all when we can do better.

As I've posted here too many times already, Hillary gets my vote, but only if she is the nominee and then I'm afraid we will go down for still another four years.

most people are focusing only on the racist aspect of it. The remark was BOTH sexist and racist, and Hillary more than any other candidate can surely empathize with this kind of treatment.

I am way more upset by the deliberate re-focusing away from the sexist issues by the media than I am about what Imus actually did.

The whole debate has been framed by white men. Who would of thunk it in the 21st century.

58. I can't understand it either, Beaverhausen
She's more progressive than some other MALE candidates who are praised on DU. She isn't my first pick for President, but I'll certainly vote for her if she runs. And, she doesn't deserve the borderline obsessive and often kneejerk HATRED on DU.

64. She ISN'T going there to speak to the basketball team
she's going to speak at the Eagle Institute of Politics at Rutgers, as part of a 50th anniversary lecture series, and is addressing the theme "Because Politics Matters: Women and Public Leadership."

Link: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dc/2007/04/hillary_is_heading_to_rutgers.html

Perhaps she'll meet with the team while she's there, but that doesn't sound like the purpose of her visit.

69. My cynicism would make me suspect her motivation,if she were going, which your OP doesn't even say
But if she does go I'll give her the benefit of the doubt this time. She's certainly been on the receiving end of true hate often enough from radio and television "personalities" that I think (hope) she could add something important to the conversation from her own angle.

I do think if she,or anyone, went it would be wise to do so in the most low key manner as possible (asking a lot these days,I know).

76. For once I don't see this as nothing more than poltical grandstanding...
I'm sorry but Sen Clinton is human after all though many of us question if most politicians can lay claim to it, she can and I have no doubt have feelings for what those poor girls have gone through.

98. I think it has grandstanding written all over it.
Rutgers is in New Jersey. Her constituents live in New York. Many of us are appalled by Imus's remarks, and sympathize with the team.

Our opinions differ.

99. I don't think it's grandstanding, I think it's campaigning
in this instance, it doesn't matter where her constituents are . . . she's running for President of the United States (and New Jersey, I believe, is part of the United States). She was in NJ campaigning just a couple of weeks ago (and picking up Corzine's endorsement). It's not at all unusual for candidates (or even non-candidates) to speak at universities, regardless of where they are . . . Schwarzenegger spoke at my university just yesterday, and I don't think he's running for anything out here in DC.

100. It's sickening how people "have" to act outraged
Stay out of it Hillary, he didn't say anything about you. It pisses me off how people have to run around and act outraged. He screwed up. He said he was sorry. He doesn't have any personal grudge against the Rutgers basketball team or black people. It was just an offhand comment where he was trying to sound young and hip. It's freaking ridiculous that he lost his job. Was it wrong for him to have said it? Sure. Is it wrong for people to pile on him til he loses his job? Absolutely. This is the kind of thing that makes Democrats look silly and petty to some people.

Edited on Fri Apr-13-07 04:10 AM by BlueIris
No, seriously, I think it's good that she's doing that. I feel so terrible for those women. It might be nice for them to get a visit from a woman who has been subjected to similarly degrading slander in the media. I hope many other prominent female professionals will continue to visit them to offer support.
