The scent of apples: I am drowsing off.

And held against the world of hoary grass.
It melted, and I let it fall and break.
But I was well
Upon my way to sleep before it fell,
And I could tell
What form my dreaming was about to take.
Magnified apples appear and disappear,
Stem end and blossom end,
And every fleck of russet showing clear.
My instep arch not only keeps the ache,
It keeps the pressure of a ladder-round.
I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend.

And I keep hearing from the cellar bin
The rumbling sound
Of load on load of apples coming in.
For I have had too much
Of apple-picking: I am overtired
Of the great harvest I myself desired.
There were ten thousand thousand fruit to touch,
Cherish in hand, lift down, and not let fall.
For all
That struck the earth,
No matter if not bruised or spiked with stubble,
Went surely to the cider-apple heap
As of no worth.
One can see what will trouble
This sleep of mine, whatever sleep it is.
Were he not gone,
The woodchuck could say whether it's like his
Long sleep, as I describe its coming on,
Or just some human sleep.

30. He became my hero in 1973 when he led the fight for health care.

The first time I met with him was 1973 at a HEALTH CARE CONFERENCE. Then in 1984, I put together a project for him in Texas with Willie Valasquez, a massive registration of Hispanics effort. Willie was a hero, who died in 1988, but left a legacy: Southwest Voter Registration Education Project. I went through Teddy's staffers and got him to write a letter to Hispanic families all over Texas, as he was immensely popular with Hispanics. Willie handled the effort, and I raised the money for it.

I saw Teddy at functions in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly functions to help Democrats win US senate seats. His head was huge, maybe the biggest head in Washington. He was bigger than life, even though not as tall as I had thought before meeting him. I was part of a group of Texas libs that included my long time friend, Lloyd Doggett. Teddy was an icon to us, and has been a stalwart in the senate. He will be missed.

It seemed peaceful last night, came back tonight and it seems to fit. I'm struck by the sadness we all are and I am so glad that he may rest in peace. His passing makes those old enough to recall reflect on the tumult we've been through. Who knows what it feels like, to someone like him, who has been through the nation's nightmares, up close and personal in a way few have. All I can say is:
