If they unplugged the phone line and did political business, it's a violation of the Hatch Act.

If they didn't unplug the phone lines and sent WH emails over RNC lines, it's a violation of the Presidential Records Act.

Nobody has ever been tried under the Hatch act and there are no penalties for breaking the Presidential Records Act.

Is such bad IT practice in a controlled and regulated IT environment, it's boggling.

Let me put it to you this way:

I have a friend who works in IT in the defense industry. His environment is so locked-down and monitored and papered with rules, he almost has to submit a 3-copy form, a month in advance, to take a shit. They cannot use IM. They cannot use Firefox. They cannot use anything but what they are told. If someone installs unapproved software, anywhere in the shop, they are fired on the spot and then, the Defense Department and FBI tear their lives into itty-bitty pieces. It's the hardest of hardball.

If this happened, then a ton of rules were broken, and, perhaps, data retention laws relating to The Hatch Act.

But you knew that.

He use to work for the Dallas City Government in IT. It took them so long to do anything, approvals, money requisitions, security out the ass....and thousands of forms....

Actually, probably multiple TDM DS3 for the whitehouse PBX. I wouldn't think they are on SIP Trunks yet...

And I am positive that Karl Rove isn't using dial up with his RNC laptop. They probably set up a unique domain within the WhiteHouse LAN for those machines to connect. I would like to see how they broke out the "cost" for what the RNC would pay for. I imagine there would be at least a couple fully redundant OC12 to 2600 Pennsylvania Avenue for data services.

Also, I'm sure it's all wireless as well so nobody is "plugging" anything in...

it seems to me that the point of the rnc computers was to avoid federal law so they may well have

been plugged in to separate phone lines.
