Video: from the Capitol to the Washington Monument: PEOPLE

I am in front of the Capitol building, standing an a concrete pylon as a I pan with the camera. Looking towards the Washington Monument... you first see 3rd St. then the back of the stage, looking past all those people, past 4th St. is the Washington Monument.

I have "heard" it takes a at least a million people to fill this space. My guess is that it was 3/4 filled... 700k ?

The DC police are saying it was under 100,000...that's what they said in '05 too!
Liars!! They always seem to downplay the "crowds" when it's an anti-war march! :grr:

It was about 3/4 the number at the 05 march (less planning time can account for that) but there were vast numbers of people out there, I'd see about 150 -200 K but then I just got that feeling from being in the crowd both times, I'm no expert

I think it was more like approx. 400,000! UJP gave that estimate.
I watched on a street video cam and the march at that intersection was for over two hours!!!

8. my estimate from experience of numbers of marches

I agree with you, probably around 100-150,000 people. Maybe 200,000. That is the feeling I had while I was in the crowd and then watched for a while as people marched by. I've been at marches that were 500,000. This did not have that feel about it. But it was definitely big, well attended. And lots of different people.

I went down with some labor people from CWA and saw lots of older and younger people there during the day. Also, many people there as families, kids, parents, grandparents, people of color. I was very happy with the numbers, and also very glad to see people from Congress speaking to the crowd. We need to keep ourselves out there in the street and in their faces so they know we mean business about ending this war and not going to Iran!

Cheers for all of us for putting ourselves out there against this war. It felt really really good to chant with so many people that Bush is a liar, not a decider, when Maxine Waters was speaking. That was a big smile moment.

3. I walked around and it was not filled to the Washington Monument

The crowd only went back a couple of blocks. After the Hirschorn museum the mall was pretty much empty.

...but that was earlier on than maybe you saw or later....

In any event, it was a big crowd...

I believe the video was shot from the area by the pool to the right #8 in the photo. The crowd, from what I saw around noon, was nonexistant from around #13 on back.

Thats about right, from #13 on, just west of 4th St. to the Washington Monumment, was mostly empty.
