Braley Blasts Grassley on Health Bill Stance
Braley Blasts Grassley on Health Bill Stance
By Jane Norman, CQ Staff

A startling verbal duel erupted on Friday as Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley of Iowa attacked home-state Republican Sen. Charles E. Grassley for using “scare tactics” about end-of-life provisions in the House health overhaul bill.

“Sadly, it appears that Sen. Grassley has decided to put his party before what’s best for the people of this country,” Braley wrote on the Web site Huffington Post.

A top aide to Grassley, Jill Kozeny, shot back that the “fatally flawed” House health overhaul bill that Braley voted for in committee “has been rejected loud and clear at the grass roots.”

The unpleasant exchange likely will spur speculation that Braley, who was first elected in 2006, might be preparing to challenge Grassley for his Senate seat in 2010.

Grassley, 75, who’s in his fifth term, traditionally has enjoyed wide popularity in Iowa and landed 70 percent of the vote in 2004. This summer, though, he has been dogged by criticism from both Democrats and conservative Republicans for his high-profile role negotiating the health overhaul in the Senate Finance Committee.

Braley, 51, represents the 1st District, rated Safe Democratic by CQ Politics and has worked to move up the ranks of House Democratic leadership.

In an essay that sounded almost like a campaign speech, Braley said that as the health care debate moves forward, “certain members of the Senate insist on moving backwards,” including “my friend and constituent, Chuck Grassley.”

5. That's an insult to snakes everywhere.
Grassley is and always has been a POS. At one time I thought he was a reasonable Republican. There is no such beast extant.

8. Indeed, Sir: No Such Thing As a Decent Or Reasonable Republican Politician
That is because there is now no such thing as a decent or reasonable Republican voter, and this is situation Republican politicians have worked hard to create for more than forty years. Even if a Republican candidate or official wanted to be decent, even reasonable, the voters he or she must rely on will not allow it. Let them perish in the pit they have digged....

4. Those "grass roots" are organized thugs
hired by the insurance companies. At least the leaders are. The rest are dupes who received those lying emails about euthanizing the elderly, etc.

13. When Assley talks gibberish...he attracts the wrong kind of attention...
Grassley's head is stuck in the 60's and 70's...he is outta his realm and too old to be effective for his Senate Job...

Clearly he wants to hurt, demolish DEM Successes, not for the good of his constituents but good for his GOP group/party.

He now risks losing elections in the future....

OBAMA has the office, the capital, and the resources to help fix what them gop/bushies fucked up for 8 years.

Pubs going all out to counter Obama's policies and programs...Having no real arrows...they resort to Brn Shirt Bully tactics

Essentially, the GOP are now Terrorists/Fascists trying desperately to hold the line against further erosion...

Grassley is not a shoo in....
