Coming Soon - Cash For Clunkers: Home Appliance Edition
Now that it's ending, you thought you were done hearing about the Cash for Clunkers program, didn't you? Not yet. Coming soon will be a state-administered, federally-funded program providing rebates to consumers who buy Energy Star appliances. Check out Consumer Reports for a preview.

As a part of the Obama Administration's economic stimulus bill to encourage the purchase of energy-efficient appliances, the $300 million appliance-rebate program will soon dole out amounts that could reach $200 if you buy Energy Star-qualified models. Appliances that qualify for the Star should use roughly 10 to 25 percent less energy than the maximum allowed for that category by the Department of Energy, which monitors the Energy Star program.

Unlike the Cash for Clunkers car program, you won't have to turn in your old appliance to get the rebate. But states are expected to have recycling plans for the flood of old appliances the program could unleash. And while the money is coming from Washington, how much you get for which appliance will be a state-by-state decision.

http://blogs.consumerreports.org/home/2009/08/federal-rebates-will-cut-costs-of-appliances-this-fall.html?EXTKEY=I91ECON&CMP=OTC-ConsumeristLinks

This could really help another sector!

4. My late 70s early 80s stove needs replacing
The eyes are slow to heat up properly. The oven is about 25 degrees hotter than the dial says. :P

I have a little toaster oven and hardly use the big one. I would love to exchange it for a new stove with a glass top that;s easier to clean.

But I"m unemployed right now and I can't spare the money. $200 is a lot of money to me right now.

19. No, that was just the trade imbalance in appliances
Lots of larger appliances are made in the US, since the cost of shipping makes their import less economical.

I think that GE still makes theirs in Louisville.

Some foreign manufacturers have plants in the US, e.g. Bosch in New Bern, NC.

Some like the big Chinese manufacturer Haier, are mostly importers.

Smaller appliances like microwave ovens are mostly imported.

10. Cash for Anything
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 09:46 AM by The2ndWheel
Bring in anything, anywhere, and buy something new. Hell, don't even bring anything in. Just buy something new. Everybody needs a new and improved this and that. Just buy something. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Never stop. If you do, you screw your neighbor out of a job. If you stop, the little kid next door won't get to eat. Never stop. Just buy. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it one day, throw it out the next, and buy another one. It doesn't matter what it is. A car, a tv, a washer, a dryer, a pen, a hair brush, a computer, a house, anything and everything. If you can't afford it, whatever it is, the government will give you money so that you never stop. Just buy it, especially if you can't afford it(it's all digital anyway, we make the numbers up as we go), and most especially if you have no use for it. At the store, there will be a trash can by the cashier. Buy the product, don't even take it out of the package, throw it away at the store, and then go back for more. As long as inventory is moving. Never stop. Just buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Don't stop. Don't even think about stopping. Just buy it. Buy it. Buy it. Just buy it. Do it. Buy it. Buy it. Buy it. You're greedy if you don't buy it. You're helping people stay and become poor if you don't buy it. Just buy it. Buy it now. Buy anything. It makes no difference what you're buying, as long as you're out there. Buy it yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Buy it right now. Buy another one. Buy another one. Do it again. Again. Again. Never stop. Go on, do it again. Come on, one more time. No reason to not to do again. You need it. You want it. Your neighbor needs you to buy it. The children need you to buy it. Don't be a greedy bastard. Buy it. Buy it. Oops, that's now obsolete. Buy the new one. Buy it.

11. Uh, energy-efficient appliances save you money in the long run.
I remember the hell my father went through eight or nine years ago when he tried to switch our family home to highly energy efficient appliances. Most places didn't stock them, and the few who did looked at him like he was crazy for not going for the highest BTU (or whatever) rating that he could afford, and instead focusing on energy efficiency. The simple fact of the matter is that these appliances reduce energy consumption and save the consumer money. Both of these are good things. And if this program brings about a greater interest in energy efficient appliances, then it's doing something good. What the hell is your issue with this program?

18. Individually
"these appliances reduce energy consumption and save the consumer money."

Saving money isn't the priority. People have to spend their money for any of this to work, not save it.

The goal is also not to reduce energy consumption. When we reduce consumption, of any kind, we get Sept 2008 through today 2009.

The goal is to decrease the price(by privatizing the profits to a single species, and socializing the costs to the rest of the planet) of consumption so that we can consume more. That's why we need to increase the efficiency of solar panels, for example. Do we want to do that so that we can consume less solar energy? No.

My issue would be that this program is continuing the same process that got us here in the first place; making it easier to consume. Not that I think there is any sort of solution to be found. It doesn't matter what we do, we can't escape physical reality. We can call our actions green all we want, but we will still find consequences for those actions. Sure, we might solve a problem here or there, but we'll create new problems from those solutions. Which makes my taking issue with the program rather pointless. Probably more of a venting than anything.

23. You're wrong.

Saving money isn't the priority. People have to spend their money for any of this to work, not save it.

Look, if you replace an existing inefficient appliance with a new efficient one, you will recoup your investment on the appliance and then some over the lifetime of the appliance. Plus it will reduce energy consumption and pollution. I fail to see how this isn't a good thing.

The goal is also not to reduce energy consumption. When we reduce consumption, of any kind, we get Sept 2008 through today 2009.

Yes, one of the goals is to reduce energy consumption. That's why the rebate is applicable to energy efficient appliances, and not bags of Cheetos.

The goal is to decrease the price(by privatizing the profits to a single species, and socializing the costs to the rest of the planet) of consumption so that we can consume more. That's why we need to increase the efficiency of solar panels, for example. Do we want to do that so that we can consume less solar energy? No.

I'd like to have some of whatever you're smoking.

My issue would be that this program is continuing the same process that got us here in the first place; making it easier to consume.

You might have a point if you boiled your own water over a fire with wood cut from your own property and washed your clothes in the creek. Most people don't do that. The goal of this program is to make it more affordable to purchase energy efficient appliances, which will reduce energy usage and pollution.

Not that I think there is any sort of solution to be found. It doesn't matter what we do, we can't escape physical reality. We can call our actions green all we want, but we will still find consequences for those actions. Sure, we might solve a problem here or there, but we'll create new problems from those solutions. 14. Speaking of made in America..
In the fall of 2006 we purchased a very small freezer for our apartment from an out of state hardware store. At the time it was made in Italy. It has been fine. A neighbor liked it and ordered one about 18 months later. The first and second ones arrived looking like they had been dropped several times and then boxed up as the packaging was pristine. The third one looked OK but did not work. The forth one worked for 29 days and quit and needed a new compressor.

Here's the kicker, the appliances were now being made in Florida. BTW Brand name Avanti.

Anyone know were to get a good deal on a commercially rated stainless steel 40+ coffee pot/urn? We got a Mr Coffee that has been used once a day that the lid knob cracked and the bracket that held the tube that indicates the amount remaining came loose. We have an extended warrenty from Office Max and 2 of three new pots we opened already had the glass tube loose. I don't have a lot of faith that this one will last.

15. I paid 2,500.00 for my stove, and it sucks
Bought a Dacor about 8 years ago. A touch sensor went out on the front panel and to replace the panel is 1,000.00. This is parts only. Labor is extra.

22. Good Luck with that, y'all
California has had a similar program for YEARS..and EVERY time we have replaced an appliance we've somehow not "qualified"..

The AC unit we bought had the frigging paperwork for the plan RIGHT INSIDE THE BOX, with the serial numbers already filled in by the seller, and with the necessary ID numbers needed from the seller..

This was the case with :

our washer & dryer
our new stove
our new refrigerator
our new freezer
and of course the AC unit $6K plus on that one

I would call the entity pushing these rebates & get a list of GUARANTEED "trade-ins",,and get it in writing that these are approved..and then get the name & title of the person sending you the list..BEFORE you buy any replacement appliances..

EVERY ONE OF THE ONES WE BOUGHT were "approved", and yet we received NOTHING..nada, zilch, zippo..

and sometimes there is a limited amount of money in the plan, and they don;t tell you how much is left, or if by the time you submit your paperwork, there will be none left for you..
