6. I'm not a sports person, and I had all the usual stereotypes about jocks
but I couldn't believe how many people here were ready to consign them to prison based on NO evidence -- just because they were jocks or "frat rats."

7. I despise frat pigs and jocks, but everyone deserves a fair trial
Being "tried" in the media doesn't count as a fair trial.

10. Everyone deserves a fair trial and everyone deserves not to be indicted
in the first place unless there is actual evidence indicating guilt.

25. He's not being prosecuted for anything in the criminal or civil system.
But his own statements in open court and in his letters, freely delivered, will earn him sanctions by the Bar association.

27. Please enlighten us as to the "evidence".
It seems those charged with the task of examining it close up found none.

28. That's what I'm saying. There was none.
And they never should have been indicted, much less tried, on the basis of non-existent evidence.

3. Thank you LoZoccolo.
And I'd add, a college student hater.

Or a hater of anybody based on their demographics, or their parent's demographics.

Any future defendant in Durham is lucky that an unethical DA is on his way out, thanks to the good work done by those expensive attorneys. No one should have to have to be wealthy in order to defend themselves against unfair prosecutorial tactics. But if these were Duke scholarship students, they'd probably be in jail today -- and Nifong would still be in office.

they most likely would have been convicted! I think this is avery frightening glimpse into the inner working of our judicial system! Even Lou Dobbs remarked tonight thatour justice system isnot only in shambles, it's non existent! He asked just how many lower income people HAVE already been convicted of crimes they didn't commit?

I can only hope the good that comes out of this attrocity forces people to look long and hard at the way out justice system is being run, and makes a lot of very necessary changes to improve it!

8. You're absolutely right. And North Carolinians should be aware
that, according to Joe Cheshire, there is a very real threat to their freedom being considered in the current legislature -- a plan to roll back the open discovery law, a law that was passed because of past prosecutorial abuses. It was because of open discovery -- which meant that the state was required to turn over all of its evidence to the defense -- that the students are free today. North Carolinians should fight like hell to stop this legislation from passing. And those of us in other states should make sure that we have open discovery laws, too.

12. Every defendant, rich or poor, benefits when a rogue prosecutor
is stopped in his tracks. Nifong was no doubt using the same underhanded tactics on others but thanks to this case, he won't have any more victims.

as opposed to having the evidence finding them innocent of any charges?

11. If you hate the rich, think about this
If you have an iPod, you have wasted anything from $149 to $249, the monthly salary of hundreds of millions around the world, in something you simply don't need. So, for many, many, many people out there, you are rich bastard as well.

20. Yes, you.
You are the one who says they are guilty, so you must have the evidence to convict them. Yet you were nowhere to be found when the case was being made.

Anyone who had any credible evidence should have provided it to the A.G.
