If our corporate 24/7 media had been around in the 50s and 60s
they would probably have been focusing all their coverage on the vile hate spewing rabble of "god fearin'" white Christian 'Mericans (the ancestors of our present day racist backward birthers and deathers) holding up nooses and signs reading "Die Ni**er Die" and spitting as a heavily guarded little black girl passed by to go to a newly desegregated school. We would have to of listened to them shout and yell about "how they wanted THEIR country back," and how "Eisenhower was destroying America."

And what would the media have referred to them as? Well, concerned citizens simply voicing their opinions, of course. We would have tweets from George Wallace "Like OMG, I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever...oh & wuz just in Piggly Wiggly to get sum shit & there was totally like a black guy there for realz. LOL scared the shizznit out of me." We would have a "conversation" CNN style with shit bag Orval Faubus on blockading the doors of Little Rock HS, followed by asking viewers to e-mail or tweet in on the "conversation." And let's just say the 50s and 60s (the red scare, the civil rights movement, the Vietnam protests) would have been one long wet dream (:puke:) for Faux News. And why would they all do it? The same reason they do it today: ratings for their corporate masters.

Although, Faux News would have done it because they are just bat shit insane.

2. I could probably
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 06:15 PM by Libertas1776
extend this post to include the 30s and 40s. Faux News would have been ranting how the bleeding heart socialist FDR was trying to destroy capitalism in America with his evil socialism blah blah blah. They would have had on Father Coughlin on Glenn Blech to expose FDRs "Jew Deal" and Lindbergh on Bill O' to show what good friends the Nazi's could be.

My God, there's one hell of a nightmarish alternate history story for you that may keep you up at night. :scared:

4. We may joke but the Media was much more Blue Collar and
therefore, IMO, did a much better job.

By the eighties things were a changing--Law School Grads
and more elite colleges and universities.

Then came Deregulation and we surely could not have
"blue collar, little guy" journalists. They needed
journalist who would not be quick to mess up De-Regulation.

Look what happened. Enrons, now Financial Meltdown.

5. You are correct...
I believe it was Joe Conason who wrote about how the perspective was different when journalists were paid at the subway-riding and regular neighborhood-dwelling scale

6. I
absolutely agree. There was a time when reporters were actually inquisitive, investigative, blue collar bunch who actually gave a damn about the people since they were...you know, the people. Now, forget about it.

Oh, and who unrec'd this post already? Geez, sorry to offend our Faux News viewing DUer's.
