2. No, but there may be a poor family that relies on Saturday mail so I voted yes, for them. The rest
of us can pay higher rates for that family to get Saturday mail.

that could be a real problem for some folks--waiting on checks or whatever...

Me? mail rarely brings anything but headaches..

10. Exactly
One should vote for what they personal want or not want (on this particular matter), and let the other 'poor family' vote for themselves.

3x per week would be completely adequate for me. Less opportunity for stolen mail IMHO. Bills would still get plenty of time to be paid. Important immediate news would come via e-mail, telegram or special delivery anyway. *tap, tap, tap* Still waiting for the special delivery announcing my rich heretofore unknown rich uncle has left me a fortune.

36. Not true about most checks being direct-deposited
I'm a self-employed person, and my two largest clients aren't willing to use direct deposit for different reasons. I still rely on checks that are mailed.

If Saturday mail delivery is cut, it will hurt people who aren't "wired" in the way you describe.

I have a post office box. I've gone twice on a day to find more mail the 2nd time. I've stopped by on Sunday to find mail (that wasn't there on Sunday). At 24 hour processing post offices you always get mail delivery

52. Credit card companies would lick their chops for this.
They already have closed the window tight on Payment Due dates because they are making most of their money on late fees. That's their game already. They send it out late and blame the mail. You send it back on time, they call it late, and they say "too bad. Pay $40."

12. I would say no except if there is a fri or monday holiday.
Haing the PO closed for 3 days can be an extreme inconvience for many people businesses...expecially catalog comoanies. If they would put more options online, like being able to prnt first class postagealong with the Priority & express mackage postage you can do now would be a cost savings. I know how nice it is to get those free shipping boxes, but mayby they shoul consider a minimal cost depending on the size . I know I've received many og their boxes turned insideout just to cheahonhaving to pay ptiority rates@

14. As a small business owners, we need speedy delivery of invoices from
our vendors so we can receive incoming product with the correct (and ever-changing) prices.

We can't update quantities on the web until we receive (bookkeeping-wise) the invoice.

We need every day postal delivery at Dogstuff.com to keep the business and our revenues flowing.

People shop on the weekends, and if we get in an order of 500 dogs-as-nutcrackers ornaments on Friday and can't receive them until Monday, we've lost three days of potential sales.

22. It should not be Saturday
If they need to cut a day off it should be Wed, Thu or Friday.

There are too many Mondays when there is no mail: Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, etc.

If there is no mail on Saturday, this would mean three days with no mail.

Some of us still use snail mail, especially for paying bills. And, no, I don't want to pay online. Not having cable last January, on Inauguration week, convinced me not to put all my eggs in one basket - cable connection.

(Thankfully, we still had one TV with rabbit ears where I could watch Obama taking the oath of office and his speech).

23. Well, I just got some important meds in the mail...
yesterday, and it was just in time. (The VA mails most medications) I get checks and parcels in the mail, along with the bills and junk, and reduced deliveries won't help anything but short-term PO budget relief.

Every year I go crazy with UPS shut down for four days at Thanksgiving, usually when I get a notice saying I have to sign but wasn't home on Wednesday. I really don't want the PO do be going that route.

Congress has to act, but the USPS should be allowed to expand its business. 38,000 POs in the country, and many of them in places with pretty much nothing else. France allows their POs to sell cellphones-- I don't know if that's such a great idea, but there must be some services the PO could sell to make more money.

Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 03:59 PM by GreenTea
having it....people will just have to wait for the USPS just like they wait for UPS & Fedex....So what!

If USPS was privatized like the republicans want....You can absolutely bet there would be no Saturday mail delivery! (Corporations ALWAYS cut corners for for profits, fuck the customers).

"I spent three hours on the phone with my USPS employed sister and learned much that has evaded any public notice.

The PMG is appointed by the President so we're going to get a new one (If Obama gets to hear the whole story). Like the rest of the top level government admins, Potter was installed by Idiot Frat Boy for ideological adherence more than any other qualification. He at least has been in the USPS for a long time so does know the system, but the programs instituted and his administrative style seem to have the demoralization and destruction of the USPS as their main goal.

The board of governors are all appointed, but the appointments are staggered so Obama can't replace the whole board without a second term.

Almost everything the USPS does is by act of Congress and the most egregious thing I learned is that they are forbidden from owning most of the equipment necessary to moving the mail. They are required to lease it from private competitors (UPS and FedEx mostly) and those competitors are under no obligation to provide the equipment and can charge whatever they want. Additionally, when a shipment is scheduled and the company has a full load of their own parcels, they leave the USPS parcels behind for the next flight/truck. If your overnight package was late, it was most likely because UPS/FedEx didn't perform and there's nothing the USPS can do about it.

The USPS is, again by act of Congress, forbidden from advertising their rates, so even though they provide superior service at less than half the price, most people will never know it.

Consider this, when we are told that the USPS "lost money" it is because they are required by Congress to subsidize the private carriers through the leases they have to pay regardless of how badly the private company gouges them/us. Six consecutive Republic administrations (I'm counting Clinton among them since he acted just like them) have turned the USPS into another corporate welfare program

She told me that the delivery vehicles are government issue and believes the actual sorting/handling equipment is USPS property.

So when you're complaining about the cost of a stamp going up a couple of pennies, just know where those pennies are really going."

I think attention should be paid to these facts, and they never seem to surface in the media.

44. I'm rural, so yes, I'd miss it. Not only the delivery aspect, but also
the fact that I wouldn't be able to put outgoing mail in the box for pickup. It's a 20 minute ride each way to the two nearest post offices and it's convenient to have full service provided by our rural carriers (i.e. buying postage, etc).

Plus having to walk out to get the mail gives me a reason to get up off my ass each day. I look forward to mail delivery. We're easily amused out here. :7

So little of the mail I get is time-sensitive. If the USPS would improve reliability the rest of the week, Monday-Friday is fine with me.

I should note, though, that eliminating Saturday delivery would be used as an excuse to lay off. That's not cool.
