For someone that doesn't believe that words matter
One of the best examples (albeit fiction) comes from the scene of "A Time To Kill" by John Gresham.
Paraphrased, it lists horrible crimes committed against a young black girl. The jury looked bored.
The attorney couldn't get the attention of the jury until he said..."Now imagine the little girl was white".
At that point, the acceptable crime became appalling.

Words do matter...if you are not a woman, maybe you don't understand how derogatory the term "ho" is, especially to young women.
It is degrading, and it is said with the intention to degrade.
Granted, Don Imus does good things with this charity, even as some have pointed out, to black kids.
Then wouldn't that be the most hurtful cut of all?
Someone who PRETENDS to be your ally, yet insults you given the chance?
This isn't a quid pro quo situation.
He should NOT be given a pass simply because he has done good things.
It is a shame that he didn't consider how his words would matter before he opened his mouth.
There is nobody to blame except himself for losing his job.

5. I understand what you're saying and partly agree but then the
devil in me raises it's ugly little head: I think of some of the degrading remarks my classmates and I tolerated in the 60's as physical education majors in college.....there's a saying that says in effect, that one must consider the source when evaluating a comment(s). I can't imagine that someone like Imus saying the awful thing he did made the young women believe they are, I can't even say the word but you know what I mean. My advice to the Rutgers' team: Consider the source and realize it's not a nice world out there.

What Imus said was awful. That kind of insult was his modus operandi. Why wasn't he called on it long ago? I felt so sorry for Chris, his latest sportscaster, everytime Imus berated him because of his excessive weight. There was no public outcry from obese people......????
