What is the hope of this Imus deal ?
Do people actually think that because of what Imus said that this is the first step to end hate radio and hate TV , do you think that now suddenly the media will clean up their act ?

For me this is just another issue of hype . My reasoning is people do have the ability to change the station at any time or shut the thing off .

I have never listened to Imus or right wing talk or hate radio or TV because I know what it is and avoid it . This is not to say they are right to spread hate and fear , they are not .

It just seems the more attention this draws the more it grows and spreads in the wrong direction , it's like free advertisment .

It's not going to change society , there has always been racial hate and opinions as well as many other fires being started . You have to change the populations views , what's inside their heart and mind to have any effect .

1. Maybe this will HELP change them.
It may seem like a drop in a bucket, but maybe it will become a torrent.

2. Same hope
I have the same hope. Sen Obama rightly called attention to the general "coarsening of the culture." Imus is (was) right up there in mainstreaming the coarseness. The politicians and pundits who appeared on his show gave him cover. A multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society like ours needs to maintain a level of civility to survive, and we've been rapidly losing it. Maybe this will have some positive consequences.

4. Better than ignoring it
You can't change the populations' view when your air waves are filled with people telling them there is nothing wrong with them.

5. I am hoping the bejesus will be scared out of all the other jerks on the airwaves
at least for a while. They may soon be back to their old tricks, but all that means is that yet another one of them will go too far and get the can...thus reinforcing the message.

It's about time we heightened the level of public discourse. Not that nobody can say anything edgy. But dammit, when you do, pick worthy targets! Not hard-working, achieving college women!
