An Open Letter to Whole Foods CEO, John Mackey
Dear Mr. Mackey,

I am really depressed today. You see, I spend about $1000 a month at your Princeton location. I also do all my catering through that location. I love my local Whole Foods.

I'm really sad because there is no way in God's green Earth that I will go anywhere near that location, or any other location, ever again. Your editorial in the Wall Street Journal guaranteed that.

Not only was the editorial short-sighted, but made it perfectly clear that the only thing you, Mr. Mackey, care about is the cash in your pocket. You profess to care about local communities, but it's clear that the only thing you care about in the local communities is how much they spend in your stores.

Let's take a moment to consider a few of your talking points:

1. "Remove the legal obstacles that slow the creation of high-deductible health insurance plans and health savings accounts (HSAs)"

2. "Repeal all state laws which prevent insurance companies from competing across state lines."

3. "Repeal government mandates regarding what insurance companies must cover."

4. "Finally, revise tax forms to make it easier for individuals to make a voluntary, tax-deductible donation to help the millions of people who have no insurance and aren't covered by Medicare, Medicaid or the State Children's Health Insurance Program."

5. "While all of us empathize with those who are sick, how can we say that all people have more of an intrinsic right to health care than they have to food or shelter?"

6. "Health care is a service that we all need, but just like food and shelter it is best provided through voluntary and mutually beneficial market exchanges."

7. "All countries with socialized medicine ration health care by forcing their citizens to wait in lines to receive scarce treatments."

8. "Unfortunately many of our health-care problems are self-inflicted: two-thirds of Americans are now overweight and one-third are obese."

Check out her retorts here - she's great: http://open.salon.com/blog/spittingkitty/2009/08/13/an_open_letter_to_whole_foods_ceo_john_mackey

1. Amazing. I wanted to do this myself, so glad someon else got around to it!
Why the hell is the CEO of a company that caters to lefties writing an op-ed where he basically chews up McCain's health care plan and spits it in his customers faces?

This is going to be taught at schools.

2. I'm urging others not to shop at whole foods
but I did that a while back because newcomers see *whole foods* and they won't shop at our locally owned health foods stores.

5. Thanks for this post. I also will boycott WF
Typical CEO "blame the people" crap & portrayal of FAT, BLOATED, corporations as POOR victims.

It's amazing how these guys always use the same adjectives to trash taxpayers that they use to glorify tax-avoiding businesses! I'd compare his situation to a corner Ma & Pa grocery store, but the mega-corps have already driven most of them out of business.

6. BAD Kitteh!
Whole Foods is going to have to dump this MFer if they want our business back. It's almost a shame he didn't get his licks in on "Teh Gays" and brown people while he was at it.

Does this moran have not ONE sane person in his life to say "NO, don't do it"?

What an asshole.
