10. Tinfoil seems to be required here - placed strategically over the LNB.
Oops the dish has gone wrong. What a shame.

17. Go put a sock over the thing (LNB) in the middle of the dish
A grey one will not show up against the grey of the dish. That will block the reception but damage the setup. Then pretend to call DirecTV tech support and tell your FIL that they can't come out until whatever day he'll be gone.

Heck, A post-it note will do the same thing - you need just enough to block the signal going from the dish to your receiver. Stick the post-it on the side of the LNB towards the dish. But that can blow off. A sock is more certain.

Edited on Wed Aug-12-09 11:09 PM by Rhiannon12866
She programmed the remote so it skipped FIXED News, and she didn't tell her husband. ;)

You have my sincere sympathies. My mother watches FAUX, too, but I have the option of leaving... x( :pals:

Oops. typo.

Very clever! :fistbump:

Wish I could do that to my mother's TVs. I always change the channel to anything else, but my brother changes them back... *sigh* :-(

29. I think all TVs now have channel lock technology now
Sometime, sneak into your mother's house and see if you can lock out the Fox News on her TV. Then be all innocent and say, "Maybe the cable (satellite, whatever) stopped carrying it? Of course, if she is getting it over the air, that is harder to explain!

36. Thanks! I'll ask somebody who knows more about remotes than I do.
She does have cable, the only thing is, there are four TVs that I can think of, and they all have to be at least ten years old...

It sure would be a relief, though. My mother may be a Republican, but she's liberal on a lot of issues, if she'd just realize it. *sigh* The stuff she watches is rotting her brain. One time she blurted out that she was against stem cell research because they killed children! But when I said What?!, she actually thought about what she'd said and realized that this was insane...

12. Laughter
is sometimes the best medicine. I know we don't think of these fools as funny but maybe if more people gave them the ridicule they deserve we would be in a far better place.

9. WHen dad comes to visit, he likes to watch fox
he's given the best reason ever though...

He can see through some of the propaganda, at 85 I don't expect him to see through all of it. But you see, English is NOT his primary, second, third, fourth or even fifth language. As he puts it, it is easy to understand.

Thankfully I have gotten him to watch Keith and Rachel... even if I have to translate.

Oh and he had Lou Dobbs on, and I said, he is a piece of racist shit.

Yes, yes he is, but you need to know the enemy.

This is a man who spent part of his youth in a hole hiding from Nazis.

13. What I would do
Edited on Wed Aug-12-09 11:29 PM by Eric68601
Emphasize your disgust that people would resort to calling other "Patriotic"(gotta throw in that "patriotic" buzz word) Americans, NAZI's all for the sake of political posturing, and how it's an insult to the men who sacrificed their lives defending our freedoms against those Nazi bastards..

Then follow up with a "don't you just hate what the Republican party has become, whatever happened to the REAL Republicans like (insert Pre-Reagan Republican here). :P

so no worries.

but his reason for FOX is that it is easy, like watching a kid's program. And he does not watch O'Reilly or Beck... just what passes for news...

25. Say "Oh, my show is on!". Go to your room
Strip down to your undies. Grab the largest knife or firearm in your home, a can of spray oil, and an old sock.

Go to the living room, watch Fox, and continually rub the knife or gun with the oil-soaked sock while agreeing with EVERYTHING they say as if you're at a revival with some fundamentalist teacher. Completely ignore your relatives. Talk to the knife/gun as if it was a newborn baby as you agree with the TV.

This might have the effect you desire.

and then argues with the TV the entire time. My mother told him to change the channel and he told her watching Fox made him feel like Einstein. Not bad for an 89 year old man.

But my Dad does not watch Fox, just CNN and local news broadcasts. But he is conservative, so I have to put up with that. Too bad he raised a crowd of liberal daughters! ;)

33. My Dad is conservative, but if I refute the BS emails he forwards, he listens to facts
I recently refuted one email with a lot of links, some from Snopes. The next time he had a right wing email, he emailed me asking how to look stuff up on Snopes so he could check the information in it.

I know I will not change his mind, but if I can keep him thinking that is progress. The big problem is that at 86 he's in constant pain and on lots of meds so his thinking is fuzzy a lot of the time and he tends to blindly forward some of the crap he gets from his fundie friends.

35. Fortunately Dad is profoundly deaf so he can't hear the right wing radio nuts
Or listen to the jerks on TV. And their BS and lies are so much more apparent in print media that when listening!

These days, Dad spends most of his time on the internet and has gotten addicted to the ability to research topics. If he were younger and lived somewhere else, he'd probably convert to a more moderate point of view, but he is just too set in his ways to do it by himself. And being in Central Florida, all his friends are conservatives so he gets that reinforcement for staying conservative.

Sigh... All we can do is to try to show them the truth.
