Nearing 150,000 user registrations...how bout a mobile version?
Edited on Mon Aug-10-09 05:08 PM by newtothegame
...or even an app? Any other DU'ers access DU via the iPhone, Pre or Blackberry while on the train, in carpool etc? Was wondering if there's been any consideration of creating an iPhone app, or at least a mobile version of the site. I'm not talking about a full-fledged version with rec/unrecc, search, etc, but access to the Greatest Page, My DU and ability to post would be awesome. Any thoughts on how much work/cost this would be, or if there any talented DU'ers that would be willing to take such a project on? I don't think I've ever seen the admins post about this.

8. I access it via Safari on my iPhone. Usable, yes. Ideal, no!
The site with all its icons up top and the multiple columns on the greatest page isn't really set up ideally for mobile browsing, IMO. I'm no web expert so I don't know what the ideal change would look like, but I'd love to hear some techie DU'ers thoughts :)

4. I load it up on my google phone via browser. An app would be cool tho...
Really, DU site software has fallen quite a bit behind the times. Video embedding, and all sorts of things have most passed DU by.

7. Using DU has been nearly impossible on my phone, palm pilot, or blackberry.
I'd like to see DU LBN text converted to speech and then made into an MP3 file for a podcast.

9. DU is like the Hotel California: You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.
My guess is that only a small percent of that number are active. Many have checked out and no longer post and some have actually permanently checked out, as in "dead", but they are still members of DU in the great hereafter, or whatever.

10. I, too, use it on my BlackBerry (which is on Verizon)
but it takes forever to load the information. I would love to see a mobile version of the site or just an app even.

12. Glad you asked the question
Posting this on my Windows Mobile app. I, too. would love to see a DU mobile app. Salon.com used to be impossible for me to load, but they now do a mobile version and it loads quick.

I probably access DU more on my phone than any other politic website, mainly cuz LBN is so good. Loading the page now isn't bad, but it requires a lot of extra sidebar manipulation to center it.

I think DU should do a mobile app and they'd probobly find it would bring in a whole buch of new eyes.

I'd volunteer to be a beta tester!

14. iPhone here with occasional access from Nokia Symbian/S60 phones.
Edited on Mon Aug-10-09 06:28 PM by Tesha
DU works pretty much perfectly on the iPhone and fairly well on the latest
Nokia smartphones (although Nokia's web browser is distinctly inferior to
Safari on the iPhone).

An app would be great. though!

15. I post OPs on DU from my iPhone, now that we have the cut-and-paste feature.
It works great as long as I have a good signal. App would be cool, though.

Various additional apps should be considered. FWIW, I'm a stick in the mud computer user.

23. Posting right now from my Verizon Smartphone
running Windows Mobile. Everything works fine for me. Browsing the forums, posting replies, and I just recced this from +6 to +7. I suspect that DU has been designed partly with mobile users in mind. Many other sites are unusable on my phone.

25. This site is fairly usable right now on the iphone
Edited on Tue Aug-11-09 10:30 PM by fujiyama
but I think a mobile version might be kind of cool including a very basic stripped down version with access to the main forums and the greatest page, which would format accordingly.

Often times though, I have to admit with the iphone I just prefer the standard full sites for browsing. With the new firmware, I'm also impressed by the improved stability of safari. For example, I can even use the real facebook site without crashing.
