Thousands of California Elders Losing Long-Term Care

Posted: Aug 10, 2009

Renowned bassist Ortiz Walton was once the youngest person and first African American to play in the Boston Symphony.

But at 75, not only can’t Walton play his bass, but he cannot bathe, dress, eat or move in his wheelchair without the help of his wife, Carol, and assistance from state-subsidized services designed to keep him in their Berkeley, Calif., home and out of a nursing institution.

Those services, were line-vetoed entirely last week by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The governor terminated $489 million in additional spending over and above reductions already agreed on by California legislators.

Gov. Schwarzenegger stated that he wished to balance the state budget without raising taxes and wanted to increase the state’s rainy-day reserve fund for future “economic uncertainties and reduce the state’s structural deficit.” Among his actions to achieve those goals, Schwarzenegger “blue penciled” programs helping tens of thousands of frail seniors and people with disabilities.

6. Well, you can't expect millionaires to pay more taxes!
What kind of heartless, soulless person are you, that you would expect someone making seven or eight figures a year to pay more in income taxes just so a bunch of old fogeys could live out their lives in dignity and peace? And now folks like Mr. Walton can to their eternal reward, happy that they weren't subjected to some socialist government death panel and denied any care or treatment whatsoever, so that Hollywood movie moguls could keep an extra couple grand in their overstuffed pockets. Anything else would, sad to say, be simply unamerican.

4. Long term care, while necessary,
is expensive and burdensome for all. How many states provide it, in fact?

11. Yes it's expensive
Edited on Mon Aug-10-09 05:05 PM by SoCalNative
but what other solutions are there? You obviously do not have a family member or friend who is disabled and at the mercy of this state for their long term care.

18. You are wrong.
I have, and have had, family members in need, and I now have a friend in need. He's sitting beside me now. Recognizing the expense, and the difficulty for states, government, and private persons to provide it does NOT mean I and others don't have and/or haven't had the burden.

Either we use our resources wisely or we don't, and thats one of the difficult decisions facing us all.

25. Prop 13
This goes on so that people can pay peanuts for property tax. That is the whole of it. The only people who will not agree are those paying peanuts for property tax. Usually inherited.

How long does it have to pour on your damn head before you realize you have to actually use your rainy day reserve???!!! Arnold just slashed his way to hundreds of death sentences just so he can have a couple MORE dollars in an emergency fund?? Hey douchebag, SPEND YOUR RESERVE during bad times, put into the reserve in good times!!

26. You missed your chance for that
He's term limited, on his way out, no voting him out involved. California elected him as often as they were legally allowed to do so, and they might send him to the Senate next.

17. He also vetoed single payer health care twice, a program that probably
would have saved much of what he is destroying in social programs now.

22. Yes - I was thinking the same thing. After the single payer passed
the legislator, he vetoes it. Lot of people aren't aware of that - how close they came. And if they had it there, it would have spread to other states.
