"Sorry, DimWit has blocked you from replying to their posts"
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 07:02 PM by TahitiNut
On edit: Yes, the membername has been changed to protect the ______.

I have no idea why this is the first time I've seen this. Just now, for the first time, I noticed a "Cannot Reply" in lieu of the familiar "Reply" button. "Huh?" I said to myself. So I clicked.

For those of you who, for one reason or another, have never or will never see this, I post it ...
Sorry, DimWit has blocked you from replying to their posts

You are blocked from replying to this post because DimWit has placed you on their "Block Replies To Me" list.

This means that you cannot reply to any of this member's posts, nor can you reply anywhere in a thread started by this member (unless they choose to remove you from their list in the future).

If you would like to similarly block DimWit from responding to your posts and threads, or to select other ignore options for this member, click here.

To return to the previous page, click here.

Unfreakingreal. Well, I'm glad I pissed someone off - I sure wouldn't be doing my job if I hadn't, I guess.

161. One instance (it may be a first) where I disagree with you
Some of us have been "stalked", and in my case, someone from DU even looked up my snail addy and sent me something really nasty, and rather scary.

Sometimes serenity demands avoiding of certain people.

So, now you may put me as the first on *your* "cannot reply" list.

81. Sadly, I do not trust All Dems, they are touchy…
In order to be a good Dem around here you MUST be in agreement 100% of the time, 98% is not good enough for many here.

You see it everywhere, "I could never vote for X because he and I only agree on 13 of 14 issues!!!!"

So as I said, today marks the day were DU has reached it's peak..

102. whats the difference between the ignore feature and Cheney's "free speech zone?"
No one will see or hear you with either one. I think it should be renamed the obsevive compulsive protection feature. For those people that just can't stop themselves from reading every reply.

115. We've had that for a very long time
It's called alert. Also, we are constrained in what we can say by the moderators. While I think this is a kind of silly, I don't see it having far reaching consequences and if it does, I feel pretty confident that our esteemed leaders will yank the feature.

104. Well, I've taken a pretty firm stance in favor of National Service.
Despite the fact that I've taken the time to describe the long-thought-out ethical underpinnings of my stance (and put it in my Journal, as well), some folks can't get past their OWN conclusions that "Anyone who thinks ___ must be a ___." When we fail to listen to another person's reasons for their opinions and smear them with base motives, we stop learning. IMHO, of course.

I'm only guessing that's the issue that's precipitated some animosity from other DUers. (Hell, it could be anything, I suppose.)

I also enjoy her political perspectives. But hosting Air America just ain't her best venue, imho.

I think it's REALLY bizarre how easily some on DU throw around the 'sexist' epithet (and innuendo).

you lose the opportunity to learn anything new.

I learn more from people I disagree with, or who disagree with me, than I do from others it seems.

We're all human, we all make mistakes and get upset when it's really not worth it. What the heck, we have troops dying in Iraq and a nut job in the White House. We have a lot more serious things to worry about than getting bent out of shape with each other here at DU.

Sorry you got blocked, but it's their loss. And they'll never realize it.

Ten threads a month about the disgrace of using the 'f' word? Oh just shut up - that's the kind of person I tend to put on ignore. It's a problem with me, I freely admit, I have no patience with certain things. Reasonably logical debate on real issues - that's awesome!!

62. Oh, I've got people on ignore
It isn't because they disagree with me, it's because they mistake insults for debate or start ten annoying threads a day or something like that. Funny thing is, I unignored someone yesterday and the first thing I saw was the person attack somebody else. Well criminy, that's probably what generated the ignore in the first place, and back on ignore they went. I won't use the block feature though because it isn't right to block opinions in a thread. I didn't realize it was set up that way.

The funniest thing is, when I see this threads complaining about the block feature, NONE of them are on my ignore. Hmmm.

Oh good lord I might give some people a stroke!!

Oh I'm bad.

I just can't be bothered with it.

Sometimes I remember because I had a positive impression of someone and was taken aback by a reply that really got hostile. But I usually forget before very long - it's just not worth worrying about.

Of course, then there was Carlos. :evilfrown:

31. Silence dissent.
I feel like this is all designed (possibly unintentionally) to silence dissent. Basically , block the people that disagree with you. That makes a lot of sense. Should we just purge the anti-choice, pro-gun, pro death penalty, free trade, DLC, pro war, etc. Democrats right now.

It's undemocratic and I honestly wonder if it's meant to promote group think. Silence the dissenters!

In fact, I've always felt quite peaceful around nursing infants. I mean - it's what they're for! Then again, I've known we were mammals for quite some time.

98. I think this feature has been a huge mistake.
One of the reasons put forth to us was that it would ease the burden on the mods. Since this feature has been implemented, I cannot even keep up with the number of locks in the Lounge and in GD. I would love to have the time to count all threads locked re this subject. And that is only in those two forums. The mods must be busier than ever. And all over this petty petty high school feature.

People crowing about how many they have blocked and how happy they are about it. People crowing about how many have blocked THEM and how happy they are about THAT! It has shown me a side of DU that is not very nice.

Tomorrow is the SOTU and all anyone can think about is this stupid new feature.

119. Some observations from the 9/11 forum.
I've ended up on 'block' lists of people I've never heard of or had any interaction with.

For example(link available to a mod on request ...some of these have been deleted):

This conversation took place on the first day of blocking....Note: #2 is now tombstoned.

Poster 1: "remember what we talked about in that PM?"

Poster 2: "Yes, I'm on it"

Poster 1: "excellent!"

Poster 1 and 2 went through the threads and 'blocked' several people.

Here are some quotes. Threats seemed to be the order of the day.

"Oh, and special thanks to xxx who conveniently gathered all the names together in one place."
"I'm genuinely grateful that you have saved me some work. Not all - just some."..........This was in reference to an unrelated thread where one poster spelled out the names of Non-Mihop/Lihopers in the thread. The quoted poster stated his intent to use the feature to block all non-LIHOP/MIHOPers on "the list."

"I would really like to see this forum become the "safe haven" that you speak of." (me:safe haven from what? Debate? Discussion?)

"And BONUS make it easier for those unfamiliar with 9/11 research to ask some basic questions without getting attacked or bombarded with talking points."

"I suspect that your run on this forum as a heckler is coming to an end, because you are probably going to be on many DUers ignore list." (several threat like this)

"because I'm pretty sure that in the near future, this forum is going to self-segregate by virtue of the new ignore function, and I doubt I'll be reading much more of what you believe."(more threats)

"When all the dust settles, I am hoping for a calmer and more informative experience in the 9/11 forum."(ah peace and tranquility on DU, At last!)

"It has the potential of completely changing the dynamic of this forum, I think, in a useful direction." (is THAT what the intent was? To completely change the dynamic of the forums?)

"what a crock" is not a rational argument welcome to my ignore list!"(seriously, that was the 'blockable' offense......from one of the more prolific blockers)

"I am looking forward to using the ignore button generously."( funny how you didn't NEED it until you it enabled you to shut others down)

"For once, perhaps, discussion will be able to "build up" (build up? Oh, you mean unchallenged "discussion")

So everyone supporting one candidate or issue can pre-block an assembled list of people known to disagree. That should work out well for DU. :eyes:

124. I've not yet made up my mind about whether this is a good or bad thing.
I think we can each expect to be on one or two block lists -- and being there probably says more about the blocker than the person who is being blocked.

The few DUers who find themselves on many, many block lists may just belong there.

As my father used to say --

If one person calls you an ass ignore them.
If two people call you an ass, laugh in their faces.
If a whole group of people call you can ass, start kicking because you are one.

The idea that anyone would prohibit another from replying to them but not actually avoid that person (and their threads) seems a bit bizarre. While I can understand the rationale for some specific circumstances, it's till a bit ... strange.

129. I think it will be fun
to see the Blocked List of some. I am aware of one poster who has blocked me, ironically it's one of the nastiest posters here.

140. I have a feeling that the passive-agressives might post very little ...
... until they can clean out their block lists.

156. I have noticed in other threads
some are now trying to justify their actions.

130. Welcome to Cowards Underground!
When the "Cowards Must Publically Disclose Their Craven Cowardice" feature kicks in, I'll simply refuse to participate in threads that have anyone blocked.

Cowards should not be encouraged.

132. Yes, I dearly love the pre-emptive blocking
It seems like this feature will become the refuge of those who refuse to believe in anybody else's opinion, or facts, other than their own. Sad, pitiful, and somewhat annoying. I thought that this party was filled with strong willed people who are open to new ideas and suggestions. Sadly it looks like there are exceptions to every rule.

Sadly, I think that this new feature will be the death of DU, albeit a slow lingering one. As more and more people block each other out, we will be divided into little cliques and crowds, excluding those whom we disagree with. Sad, pathetic to see a fine place like this fade away in such a manner.

I fully realize that I hold views that many don't, and I also realize that I argue them fiercely at times. But I, like the vast majority here, listen and learn a lot more than I argue, and have found that my POV changes both from reading and arguing. Besides, such debate amongst ourselves only strengthens us for the encounters we have in the real world.

Here's hoping that the admins realize what a mistake they've made and remove this new feature:toast:

137. Some people are very adept at telling others WHY they think the way they do.
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 08:22 PM by TahitiNut
Strangely, they always seem to be more expert in that "why" than the person themselves, no matter how well-described the person's reasons. Go figure.

Carlos: "You only dislike Lieberman because he's Jewish!"
(I can't describe how far my jaw dropped when he'd say that to people.)

143. Yeah, it's amazing how some people can damn near do a complete psychological analysis of others
All over an anonymous internet chat board. It is absolutely stunning sometimes.

Ahh, Carlos, in a perverse way a miss the guy. Somewhere out there he's probably reading about this new feature and is mighty pissed, realizing the missed opportunity he could have, blocking himself off completely from all contact here. Of course Skinner did say that with this new feature he might allow some banned folks come back, so we might just get to watch that spectacle yet:rofl:

141. Having read this entire thread
(to this point), I am DYING to know who blocked TahitiNut! I suppose a new thread would be in order, since the blocker can't read this thread. Right? :silly:

I am so confused.

164. Well, it's clearly nobody in this thread (so far) but I'd be violating two rules ...
... mine and DU's if I were to identify the person. After all, the block is a tool DU provides and the person is entirely within his/her rights to use it. I may disagree and regard it both as ill-targeted and childish, but that's not a license to break my own rules, let alone DU's.

158. (lol) Well, up until about 18 months ago, I don't think I ever had a post removed.
Then I saw the "error of my ways." Rather than spend so much time meditating and chanting a mantra, I decided to vent some spleen when folks got personally insulting and abusive. (sigh) Now I've probably had more posts removed than I can count ... at least 100-200. (Sorry, mods.)

149. I think this was the first "innovation" or "improvement" I've ever disagreed with
Ignore, I've used a couple times, but I always end up taking it off. To be able to block a person from replying to ANY responses in a thread is just going way too far IMO. It can be too easily abused.

It just doesn't seem.....democratic. I hope it doesn't last. I think alert and ignore are good enough, and I hope they rethink this one.
