I don't like to go to Canada anymore
All those dead Canadians laying all over the place, done in by their bad prescription drugs and terrible health care.

10. Laughing.
I thought your post was serious and as a displaced Canuck, was curious why.

My Canadian mother, who has lived in the U.S. with my doctor father since 1978 i.e. not long after they developed "socialized medicine", hates the Canadian system. Why? Because her uncle in Canada had to wait three weeks for a procedure and during that time he got dramatically more ill. Fair enough, but she has been insured to within an inch of her life through my father, since Day 1, and gets not only instant care, but the best fucking care available. She has absolutely no idea what it might be like to live with minimal insurance or no insurance and she seems to be unable to imagine it. I always think of her when I hear the arguments about waiting times, limited access to physicians, etc. There is a portion of the American population that is used to prompt, excellent care and I can't blame them for worrying about losing it (hell, I used to be one of those people). But then, what of the others? Suddenly uninsured and who knows, probably uninsurable for all my pre-existing conditions, I see it all from the other side, and I think: would I be willing to give my cadillac-type treatment if it meant that other, possibly sicker people got the same treatment as I? I would. But I've only ever thought of it since being uninsured. Some people are ignorant or unimaginative but not mean or stupid. What will it take so they understand?

Just my little rant/thought process.

32. Who do you think gets "cadillac-type treatment" ?

Not me and I am self-insured to the max. I still cannot just walk into any Doctors office and say "where is the doc?".

You sure that other side exists?

14. There is some credence to the wait time problem
Edited on Fri Aug-07-09 10:56 PM by GodlyDemocrat
My grandfather died of prostate cancer 11 years ago because it took him 13 months to get to the urologist. However, talking with my dad about this today, he told me the real fault was other family members not getting the files to the urologist saying that he had already been diagnosed with prostate cancer in the US.

33. I don't want to go into too much detail on an online forum, but I'll try my best to give context
This is a personal family situation and I know anything I type ends up on Google.

Long story short, when I was a child my grandfather left my parent's home to go to Canada. My aunt there took him to the primary care doctor, but did not get the files from the US doctor documenting he was already diagnosed with prostate cancer. Low and behold, when he went to the urologist they had found his cancer had already spread. My dad and his dad were not talking from after my grandfather had left until news came his cancer had spread. Long story involving my dad's brother just dying in a foreign country of malaria (We're a family of immigrants - uncle had not immigrated but dad wanted him to).

I will not assign fault on an online forum. Sorry.

37. My dad said today he did not blame the Canadian system
He blamed the lack of communication of the prior prostate cancer diagnosis that happened in the US. I'll leave it at that, but my sense is the breakdown of family communication (without assigning specific blame :D) was the major reason for failure of care here, not the Canadian system.

We have wait times here too. It takes me 3 months to see my scoliosis doctor. If the wait times were shorter, could there have been a possibility my grandfather's cance would not have spread and he would have survived? Sure. But I think the major takeaway for us is, despite whatever conflict there may be, good communication with your doctors and amongst family is key.
