White Racists Want Their America Back.

I underestimated the hate in America. When Obama ran, I supported a different candidate because he was to the left of Obama. I thought electing a black man would be a great thing, but found his positions too conciliatory with big business. Obama was left of center, a man with a good heart, but I wanted a fighter, and I didn't think he would be one, at least not as much. When my candidate dropped out in late January 2008, the brusies from dkos battles were too great to endorse Obama right away, although I did in early May, a couple weeks before John Edwards did. Long preamble, but here's my point.

I was wrong. Electing an African-American was the most progressive thing we could do. Until we deal with race in this nation, until the racism of white privilege is extinguished, progressive outcomes will always be difficult to obtain. And electing Obama is beginning of the end of white racism as way of life in this nation.

It's not about health care, public options, details of plans. That is not what motivates the opposition we see. It's the end of a way of life in which mediocre whites have better jobs, better lives, better health care, because of their skin privilege. It's the end of an idea, an idea that told some whites that they were better just because their skin was pinkish or "flesh-colored" as Crayola so racistly used to describe.

It is the death rattle of racism. The racists feel it. Their way of life is ending. White privilege is going away. It may take time and there still are many examples of institutionalized racism (differing medical outcomes, diseases, health, lead poisoning, environmental injustice, African Americans overrepresented in poverty, job discrimination, educational discrimination, ... etc.), but the direction is clear.

With the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States, their way of life is ending:

That America is going, going, gone. Justice exists, a better America is being created. The Reverand Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream is in sight, and their nightmare is fading away for the majority of Americans.

The birther movement is just an example of the refusal to accept the legitimacy of a black man as President. Insurance companies cynically are capitalizing on the white racist anguish, profiting from hate in an effort to save their profits from disease and death. But this is about more than health care to the Tea Baggers, more than taxes. It's the end of their way of life.

America is greater than the sins of slavery and racism. It's not her America; it's America. And Barack Obama, a black man, is our President.

Unfortunately the story sunk like a stone. Native Americans don't hold much water for most DU'ers in the "race relations concern" hierarchy.

You're right - it's not as high on the "race relations hierarchy because we're not exposed to it in our day to day lives. Doesn't make us evil, just more concerned with problems under our own noses.

I don't know a single Native American, and have never seen one suffering obvious discrimination by white co-workers (which I see with my own eyes with black colleagues). I don't hear slurs being used against them when people think they're among like-minded racists (whereas I hear people still using "niggers" in casual conversations). I don't have Indian friend bitching about DWI (but I hear about black friends being pulled over).

I'm certain they ARE suffering job discrimination, having slurs slung at and about them, and getting racially profiled, but I don't see or hear it like I do with friends/neighbors/colleauges who are black.

It's demographics. People in Spokane WA or Chandler AZ may see and hear the injustice being done to native americans, but its not on our radar here in the East. I'm not defending it - just saying that we tend to be more concerned about things that go on around ourselves.

But if it's a concern of yours, keep speaking up, posting threads, helping raise awareness.

But I do think there's unfortunately a general "hierarchy" if you will regarding whose rights we DU'ers will get up in arms about to defend. And as an African-American man myself, I'm not afraid to say that it's disturbing how riled up people on DU will get about the Gates issue, or a picture of Obama as a witch doctor, but stories about other discrimination sink pretty quickly. Here's how I see our priorities:

in addition to sheer proximity. Many of our parent weren't around to oppress native americans, but certainly relished keeping black folks in their place (I shudder to hear my own parents' stories of growing up in the 1930's, and how they themselves treated non-whites).

And I agree that women's issue sink to the bottom, partially because I think sometimes we women are so used to the shit the culture puts out there about us that we either buy into it to some degree or at very least don't even see it, and partially because we know some of the guys will scream "man-haters!" if we bring anything up, even here. I have ALWAYS said we'd have a black president long before a woman president (although i'm surprised our first black President was a Dem - I assumed it would be a Republican of some type). I knew this when I heard misogynist military types salivating over the prospect of Colin Powell for President, at the same time they were so worried that Hillary would in some way personally emasculate them.

I know a White couple who have (1/2)Mexican son by the wife's previous marriage, and the husband is bigoted against Blacks.

People go to South America, Asia, or Russia to adopt. It's only recently that White couples have been adopting Black children.

I would say that Blacks have been the least accepted of minorities. Perhaps that's why people are so passionate about it.
