Federal legislation directs $350 million to help dairy farmers

An amendment to the federal agriculture spending bill will direct $350 million to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Administration to help dairy farmers across the country, according to a Tuesday news release from U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

Schumer and Gillibrand co-sponsored the amendment, which passed along with the entire agriculture spending bill, Schumer’s spokesman Max Young said. The bill now must be signed by President Barack Obama, Young said.

Farm Service Administration officials will have the ability to decide how to use the $350 million, Young said.

The senators said they hope the funding assists New York state dairy farmers, but they also said they will work to find further solutions for the dairy farmers.

1. Can we pay them to stop using growth hormones and excessive antibiotics?
Oh wait, first we'd have to admit that was a problem, officially. Stupid FDA.

3. We began subsidizing milk production in this country in the mid 1930's
Milk Marketing Agreements. Its been a very long time since I looked at this and I'm not going to go into it again but as I recall it began in 1936 with the Milk Marketing Act or something with a similar title.
