Putting an End to Glenn Beck's Racist Antics and Apocalyptic Rhetoric

By Tana Ganeva, AlterNet. Posted August 3, 2009.

The Fox host's attacks on Obama are beyond the pale. How much longer will his advertisers, like GEICO and Proctor & Gamble, accept this?

Shock jock and Fox host Glenn Beck, who has built a career out of stoking the paranoid delusions of the right-wing fringe, managed to outdo himself last week when he accused President Obama of hating white people.

"The President has exposed himself as a guy … over and over and over again … who has a deep-seated hatred for white people … or the white culture…. I don't know what it is" Beck said on Fox and Friends.

Beck's wildly offensive charge, spurred by the recent controversy over the arrest of Henry Louis Gates, Jr., was the latest low in a longstanding conservative narrative that ludicrously paints white men as the victims of "reverse racism" and oppression by minorities. Beck's egregious attack has prompted Color of Change to launch a campaign urging Beck's advertisers -- which include GEICO, Proctor & Gamble, and even United Postal Service -- to stop sponsoring the shock jock's divisive hate-mongering.

- snip -

So far, Beck's hateful sermons have triggered almost non-stop condemnation from liberal circles and even the mainstream media. Beck's latest outburst was excoriated across the web and on cable news. On Sunday, CNN media critic Howard Kurtz wondered if Beck should be fired over his latest comments. "Apparently, you can say anything about the President of the United States and still stay on the air" said Kurtz. "My needle has hit the maximum (of outrage)."

- snip -

Surely, the companies that sponsor Beck -- which, in addition to Geico and Proctor & Gamble, also include Nestle, Kellogg Company, Wal Mart, and Kraft Foods -- just need to be pushed in the right direction. "When they see tens of thousands of people signing on … " writes Color of Change, "We believe they'll move their advertising dollars elsewhere, damaging the viability of his show and possibly putting him out of business."

The organization goes on to outline the repercussions of Beck's vicious attacks. "Some people refuse to accept the fact that our president is Black or the idea that he could truly serve all Americans. We know that. The only way these views will fade away is if they're not reinforced by mainstream society. Instead, folks like Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, and Rush Limbaugh are exploiting racism and race-based fear to bump their ratings, stirring up racial discord in the process."

8. Kayne West and Glen Beck are like kernals in an ear of corn
They both made ignorant and bombastic claims that two different Presidents hated their opposite
hues. I would hazard a guess that this latest outrage will garner them same amount of disdain.

19. We know, every act of racial aggression by a white person is balanced by a black person
That's the standard narrative; we've heard it all before.

The reason this case is different from the one you came up with is that advertisers pay Glenn Beck to announce his opinions. People are interested in seeing how these advertisers respond to an established pattern of crapping on the president.

20. You're not serious. Kanye put it "George Bush don't like black people"
Edited on Mon Aug-03-09 08:41 AM by crikkett
and he in fact did have evidence to support his argument. "Don't like" is not "hate." Glenn Beck said 'hate.'**

Saying that a cop behaved stupidly, on top of being true, is not an attack on whites.

Welome to DU, enjoy your stay.

** I know this secondhand because I won't allow that man, or the network that broadcasts his show, to pollute the atmosphere of my home.

30. Even if you saw West's statement as inflammatory, it's a different situation than Beck's.
Why? Because Kanye West doesn't represent himself as a newsman, someone who claims he is bringing you the "true facts" under the guise of common sense. You can agree or disagree with West's statement, but in the end he was just a celebrity making an opinion.

Beck, on the other hand, is a Fox "News" "journalist" attempting to portray himself as a great disseminator of truth to his audience. The implications of his statements are much greater than West's due to its context.

46. And as someone already pointed out
Kanye West was referring to the criminally negligent homicide of NOLA residents by the Bush administration. I doubt anyone watching that tragedy unfold could think anything else of George Bush and his gang of criminals.

45. Are you for real?
Care to tell me why you're bringing up an 8 year old event just so you can downplay the actions of a vehement racist? Have any more dated references make? Perhaps a reference to the Zoot Suit Riots just to round things out?

17. I've disliked Beck ever since his anti-Muslim remarks
At the time I worked for a pest control company, and the boss was a great fan of Beck's. He believed everything Beck said, and wouldn't listen to reason. I was always worried I'd be fired because of my faith (even though I didn't proclaim it, others in town knew and he could have easily found out if he was so minded).

Here's what I put in the comment box when I signed the petition:

I'm tired of having your fine products sullied by their association with a fearmonger like Beck. I will reluctantly have to stop using them if you continue to support Beck through your advertising dollars.

21. Suggestion: If you contact Procter & Gamble, they'll be more impressed
if their name is spelled correctly as "Procter," not "Proctor"--which I imagine they're heartily sick of by now.

Too bad Alternet got it wrong.

Not United Postal Service. Don't want people to get confused and start sending the USPS nastygrams.

40. Why should Fox stop? It's getting ratings!
Heck, it's getting people like YOU to watch! Why on earth would they want to get rid of a ratings winner, since they already admitted that the only reason Fox hires certain people is to get ratings? Not truth, not national harmony, but RATINGS?

It's another loser campaign that will have no effect.
