Repubs never really believed America would elect Barack Obama.
Up until the election, they truly believed that McCain and Palin were going to be President and VP. They were traumatized by the results.

From a personal viewpoint, we had friends that we celebrated anniversaries and birthdays and Thanksgiving and Christmas. They thought it best that we no longer associate after Obama was elected. His wife said he was afraid of what he might say.

He thought McCain was going to win. There was no way America would elect a black man as President of the United States. And when they did, he had a very difficult time accepting it. I think that a lot of Republicans are in a similar boat nowadays?

14. not quite - Obama's victory was predicted
from about a week after the Republican convention bump until the election, Obama was expected and predicted to win. The 2004 election was considered a toss-up for the whole campaign. Although I did not understand why Bush didn't get thumped like Herbert Hoover. Kerry stickers were all over this Kansas town, and we could not keep his yardsigns in stock. I expected the congressional elections of 2004 to look more like 2006 too. When Congress was called as "almost 100% the same" on election night and the Presidential election was still up in the air, I thought we were screwed even with a Kerry victory. The Republican Congress wouldn't have done anything for him. Anyway, the country turned out to be far more misinformed than I thought.

3. Obama couldn't have been elected without a substantial % of the white vote.
Edited on Sun Aug-02-09 03:08 PM by Kber
I wonder if they are having trouble (assuming most republicans are white, I guess), accepting that most white people aren't like them.

They must feel very isolated and alone right now.

4. i think the evidence disagrees with you
at least when it comes to republican /conservative media organs like national review, american spectator, etc. most of the columnists i read were pretty resigned to the fact he would win, well before he did.

otoh, what you say may be true amongst rank and files who are no more likely to read national review, than rank and file dems are likely to read salon or the nation.

but at least amongst the cognoscenti, i see ample evidence they thought mccain's chances were slim at best.

5. I heard that from a dozen people....
when I was in Oklahoma last year. They were certain that no black man could EVER get elected President. They based that on the fact that most of their redneck friends believed that way. I tried to point out that our little town in rural OK wasn't representative of the entire nation but they had no frame of reference for that idea.

What's funny is that they still have a Fox News viewpoint of our President but are enjoying many of the programs started by Obama such as Cash For Clunkers and the many construction jobs generated by the stimulus program.

6. I don't know, the polls showed all along that Obama was going to kick his ass. McCain was the
sacrificial lamb. Romney dropping out when Obama had it in hand was a sign.

I think many of them still did not believe it would happen.

8. Same experience here. I maintained a long friendship through the dark Bush era, but when Obama ....
...was elected she disappeared. I think she simply couldn't deal with pretending she wasn't livid my guy won, even though I was gracious when her team screwed up the world. I think the Republican menality can only cope when they are in power.

26. I have a similar experience with a friend. Even though she hated Bush and didn't
like McCain, she decided not to vote. She can't even mention Obama's name but won't admit it's racism...He wasn't "experienced" enough, she said. Bullshit.

15. Yeah, I remember what my 16 year old son said at the time:
He was falsely accused of keying a car. He was very upset by this and I was explaining to him that I didn't believe he would actually be charged because he didn't do it and that people weren't stupid - he countered (this was October 2000) with "yeah but they're going to elect Bush!" I couldn't say anything to him to contest this one.

He is now a graduate of Michigan Law School by the way!

They spent all their energy tearing down Hillary Clinton. They were just sure she was going to be The One. See, they helped elect him, in a way. The silly billies!!

23. Some staunch Dems too!!!
My family members were seriously "concerned" for me because HE WASNT going to win, and they thought I would have a breakdown. I insisted with tears in my eyes they had no idea what was happening, with the "Machine" Obama had built. I did receive many congratulatory calls election night. It was gracious of them. I guess I should explain whole family are Dems except for 1 who I think is a closet Repub.

Like when the Supreme Court handed over the Presidency to George W. Bush, and when he took the next election. We were laughed at and then told by Republicans to "Get over it"... I guess, it is now their turn to "GET OVER IT".
