Obama 'Joker' posters with a racist influence are appearing on the streets
Someone is taking far too much liberty with Photoshop. According to two different blogs the Obama "Joker" poster is turning up on the streets around Los Angeles. A picture of the poster can bee seen on the right. Unfortunately, in looking at the comments of these blogs the poster is actually praised rather than condemned. It seems political discourse has reached a new low. In fact, it is no longer discourse but simply racist images with one word posted on the streets.
The poster is an obvious inverse of the "blackfacing" of actors during the Jim Crow era. The major difference of course being in this poster President Obama is "whitefaced" with Joker makeup. Conservatives can tell me all day this is not racial but in all honesty can we really say the poster does not play on some emotions? In addition, the poster plays on the conspiracy theories advocated by commentators like Glenn Beck that Obama is somehow trying to takeover the country.
The appearance of the poster along with the growth of the Birther movement are discouraging signs for our democracy. There seems to be a very disgruntled minority of citizens who simply can not accept the legitimacy of Obama election. Rather than oppose the President using civility and the ballot box these groups are instead trying to fight using smear campaigns and outright lies.
