Diabetes Experiment
<http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20070410/hl_hsn/stemcelltherapymaycombattype1diabetes>

snip -

TUESDAY, April 10 (HealthDay News) -- A pilot study of people newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes found that stem cell therapy eliminated the need for insulin therapy for varying periods of time.
This is the first trial to look at stem cell therapy in humans with this form of the disease. But experts stressed that the research is preliminary and urged caution when interpreting the results, which are published in the April 11 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

This could be big, but should people not get their hopes up? I wonder how much would we progress if the US gov't was completely behind these types of experiments.

1. I have had Type 1 for 45 years
I'm used to hearing "research is preliminary" and "urged caution when interpreting the results",,,,

2. I've had it
for 7 yrs and I can't help but feel optomistic, yet I feel I may be seriously setting myself up for disappointment. It may also be too late for people like us because I think it's only for people who are newly diagnosed.

4. I would urge all those with chronic diseases to seek
the council of a certified naturopath. Big Pharmas don't want you to know that there are safe, effective remedies out there that will have you on the path to being well.

15. No, I don't think that simply asking someone to get another opinion is murder.
I was merely trying to help someone. So many folks, and maybe you included believe everything their doctors tell them, like they are some kind of God. And I think it is a real shame when there are alternatives. There is a book called, "Death by Modern Medicine".You might ought to look into it, before you call someone well-meaning like me a murderer.

19. They should not get a second opinion
from somebody who is completely unable to treat what they have.

Type 1 presents with extremely high blood glucose and ketoacidosis. There is no question really about what is wrong and they have very little time to live at that point sans administration of insulin.

People seem to think of insulin as a drug to treat diabetes. It is a hormone used to replace the hormone that is missing.

Even type 2 cannot be "cured" although it can be treated by a variety of methods including diet and exercise. There are some great herbs and dietary supplements like chromium that can help control blood glucose levels in type 2's (but not in type 1's).

But the underlying syndrome doesn't vanish and there are a host of complications and effects of the disease besides the high blood glucose levels, including lipid metabolism, etc.

13 out of 15 patients off medication...rebuilding the immune system. It does sound promising.

9. I have borderline gestational diabetes
And I really miss sodas and ice cream - I can't imagine having to watch my diet this closely forever. I very much sympathize with those who have it - like my mother (which is what is putting me at risk during this pregnancy - genetics).

I hope this gets the results diabetics seek.

13. I truly hope so too...
I really can't understand how an issue like stem cell research could have people divided at all. I'm not counting on this to cure me but at least it's progress and could prevent so many kids from having to adapt to this lifestyle.

18. I have to take that with a grain of salt
Type I diabetic for 6 years now and while the research sounds promising it's tempered with the realization that for big Pharma the money is in the treatment and not the cure so all this is just designed to keep up our hopes without really finding anything.
