sOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (AP) - A southwestern Michigan landmark is closing after 154 years in business.

The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reports the family that owns Hale's Department Store in downtown South Haven plans to close the business in mid-September.

The family says in a statement that the "most serious economic downturn since the Great Depression" led to the decision. The store this month plans to host a "Final Anniversary" sales event.

1. Very sorry to read the news. South Haven's a great town...
...I was raised in St. Joseph. My chums and I spent many of happy hours at the South Haven State Park. We love the park, the town, the people, and the kind ranger who put up with some very rowdy kids.

Things have not been the same in Western Michigan for a long time...since Amway's cheap import-based pyramid scheme replaced the manufacturing economy.

May the Hale family and the community they served once again find the prosperity they deserve.

2. There is a Walmart less than a mile away, right?
It's a sad, sad story happening around the country.
