"Cash for Clunkers" success criticized by corrupt and desperate Republicans
Edited on Sat Aug-01-09 09:56 PM by BREMPRO
I'm just endlessly amazed at the depths of depravity in the Republican caucus. Not just the weekly sex scandals, corruption, hypocrisy, lies, etc... but here we have a government program in "cash for clunkers" that is a wild success (stimulating the economy, creating jobs, helping the struggling auto and banking industry, and, god forbid, helping to reduce greenhouse gases). So it's working much better than expected and they need to add more funds-bid deal. So NOW the refuclicans are so nervous that the government can actually do something well, that doesn't play into their invented myths that govt.can't do anything right (except the pentagon) that they desperately try to turn a gem into a turd. They can only throw volleys of sh$t and grasping criticism in a vain attempt to turn it into a referendum against government involvement in health care reform (esp. the public insurance option). These creeps are unredeemable twisted lying bastards and have no shame or credibility. AND their public spokesman in this story I just read? Jerry Lewis of California, voted 3 times as the most corrupt lawmaker in congress, currently under Federal investigation for defense contracting lobbying corruption, with ties to convicted felon Jack Abramoff. What do you want to bet he's getting some big dough from the health insurance industry... I didn't think i could get more disgusted, but this story just breaks the record for Republican idiocy. Keep digging.

From that "fair and balanced" news outlet:

"President Obama said the program has "succeeded well beyond our expectations" and is pushing the Senate to pass the measure next week.

But Republicans are questioning the government's readiness for wading deep into other private-sector strongholds, such as health care.

"If this is how the government is going to handle billion-dollar programs affecting all Americans, I ask, whatever will we do if this administration takes control of our health care?" Rep. Jerry Lewis, a California Republican, told the Wall Street Journal."

1. The success was spun beautifully, wasn't it
They took success and tried to turn to shit, the only thing the GOP is good at is turning things to shit.

The truth will play out and once again the republican spin machine will be exposed for what it is.

5. One other benifit of the program i forgot to mention....
less dependance on foreign oil, and with less gas usage, lower prices for all.

I say pox on the critics.

2. "Democrat rescues baby from burning house, called kidnapper"
The republicans will criticize everything, success or not. Last night I posted a story about my local news anchor who followed a slanted hit job on cash for clunkers with a snide "And these are the people who want to run your healthcare. They focused on local confusion about the program, but did no investigation of details that would have cleared it up. All they did was imply that the confusion was typical of any government program, not the fault of the putz who wanted to buy a truck that gets 10 mpg with the rebate, or the dealers who saturate the same newscast with ads and jumped the gun on some of the trade-ins.

For years we heard environmental programs would hurt the economy. Now, like you pointed out, we have one that helps. It's biggest problem is its smashing success.

I just saw a "cash for clunkers" ad by GMC. They were encouraging people to bring in their "clunkers" for a great deal and trade in on GMC vehicles. While the script is being read they show video of GMC cars and trucks. What do they shoW?? HUGE HULKING TRUCKS AND SUV"S. That's just plain misleading and unethical. Customers can't get the cash unless they purchase a high mileage vehicle, which i think out of the half dozen vehicles shown, maybe one would qualify. it's no wonder people are confused. The only other criticism i've heard is that the web site has lots of "paperwork" for the dealers and reimbursements to dealers is slow. There is no problem for customers, but some dealers have complained out the process- i say they are lucky to get the business and should stop complaining. This is an unfair criticism on a program that has only been in operation for a week. It partly a result of the unexpected popularity and it always takes time to work out bugs and would be the case with any program, government or privately run. also heard that some people are complaining that they made responsible decisions by buying high mileage vehicles years ago and are now being "penalized" buy not being able to get the cash. Well you can't ever have a perfect program and sorry for all those 19mpg cars, but the point of the program is to get gas guzzlers off the road, not to give everyone a rebate on buying a new car.

It's clear now the repuke strategy is to oppose and refuse to negotiate EVERYTHing the Democrats propose, not on its merits, but just to push their ideological fantasies and corporate agenda. it's time to quit with the attempts at bipartisanship. It's over.

6. Good point
KFC had a similar problem giving away free chicken. It's not a public vs. private sector issue. When you have a lot of people and money involved, there will be unforeseen problems.

3. This new pattern is all starting to make some sense now
Anytime Obama and the Democrats launch a program that seems successful and republicans roundly criticize it, then Obama and the Democrats should dig in and do it even more
