Royal Canin Canada, a unit of Mars Inc., said it's recalling a brand of canned cat food made by Menu Foods Ltd. that contains contaminated wheat gluten linked to the deaths of at least 16 animals.

The company's Medi-Cal Feline Dissolution Formula, made at an Ontario plant, is being withdrawn from veterinary clinics, the Guelph, Ontario-based unit said today in a statement. The affected food isn't sold through supermarkets or pet-food stores and must be prescribed by veterinarians.

Royal Canin said it was ``completely shocked'' to learn that the wheat gluten had made its way to Canada, after being assured by Menu Foods that it was distributed only in the U.S.

{snip}

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said last week that 16 pets died from eating food with melamine, and that the official count could rise as the agency investigates.

My cat eats the feline dissolution chicken in gravy and I know it's got wheat gluten in it. :scared:

Edit: I have Royal Canin USA so I hope this is only distributed in Canada (not that I hope Canadians lose their pets). Max has been on this case for almost 2 weeks and he seems fine.....

4. I have gotten several Royal Canin emails saying they were not
involved with Menu and all their food was safe...I guess they were lying.

5. Hey the FDA lied about the suspect gluten being sold for human consumption
after repeatedly saying it was only sold to pet food companies it is now admitted it was also sold to companies making human food - which they won't name. LINK

Was human food tainted too?
Suspect gluten went to plants that make products for people, FDA says

10. Try the truth. Your link is to an Apr 3 article, and it says this:
"To date, we have nothing that indicates it's gone into human food," said Dorothy Miller , director of the FDA's Office of Emergency Operations . "We have a bit more investigation to do."

Here's current FDA info, dated Apr 7:
http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/petfood_update.html
It states:
"...At this time there is no evidence that any wheat gluten contaminated with melamine has entered the human food supply..."

What PROOF do you have that the FDA has "lied"?
What PROOF do you have that the contaminated wheat gluten has entered the human food supply?

You need to keep up with what is happening and not rely on old information.

what you are saying....maybe you are weeping because people are not happy with the pet food industry which will, of course, financially impact veterinarians.

12. Last year I sold less than $5000 worth of OTC pet foods. And since NONE
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 08:59 PM by kestrel91316
of my patients got sick from recalled food, that number is only likely to increase. But I don't expend much energy on it - it's a convenience that my clients REQUEST.

Any vet who NEEDS to sell pet food to make a profit is in the wrong business.

Besides, we vets ALL know what happens when owners start concocting their own pet foods: gastrointestinal problems increase, nutritional problems affecting every body system increase, and owners get more lackadaisical over time so the problems just escalate exponentially. It would be in my financial best interests to encourage my clients to feed homemade foods, junky off-brands devoid of nutrition, and raw meat diets. My income would surely jump substantially.

It may come as a total shock to some, but I place my patients' well-being FIRST. EVERY SINGLE DECISION I make in my daily practice, and EVERY SINGLE RECOMMENDATION I MAKE is made with my patient's best interests put first.

If I practice honestly and ethically, that is worth more than all the money in the world to me. I always sleep with a clear conscience. You can't PAY me enough to get me to compromise my ethics. Just ask my former employers.

But if it makes you feel superior, you go right ahead and keep calling me a lying, moneygrubbing shill.

6. Gee. My landlord had Royal Canin prescribed for his cat ...
And she died of kidney failure, too. I can't help wondering if this sort of thing has happened before, and they never told us!

8. Thank you for posting this Shallah I feed my dogs Royal Canin
dry lamb and rice, the pups have been fine, but I JUST WANNA KNOW!!!!

Sorry for shouting, not directed at you, just the effing stupidity and lies and secrecy surrounding of all of this, Menu Foods, the FDA and their 'bosses', same as the oily bloodbath of lies bosses.

Again many thanks for the info, I am calling Royal Canin right now.

And to anyone who read this post my sincere apologies because a week or so ago I was recommending Royal Canin to people concerned about their food.
