looking for some feedback :)
Edited on Sat Aug-01-09 02:08 PM by WhaTHellsgoingonhere
I just sent my congressional reps this letter. I won't hear back from them for several weeks, so I'd like some feedback :) Here's the body of the letter.

My current monthly COBRA premium is $145, however, I'm about to exhaust my benefits.

Please let me know which government agency will accept my $145 monthly premium payment. Since I have a preexisting condition, private carriers have treated me mercilessly and stripped me of my dignity. Sending a penny to a private carrier is a form of enabling, or forgiving and rewarding your abuser despite all the years they’ve abused you.

In protest, I’d rather go uninsured than send a private carrier a single penny*. On the other hand, I’d rather send my $145 to the government than go uninsured.

*hyperbolic argument, but I hope it helps drive home my point! ;)

1. WOW, you wre very fortunate! The COBRA payment for my
husband was $865/mo!!! We couldn't afford that for sure but he got lucky & got a job right away. We had to go uninsured for the 3 month waiting period on the new job.

I hope everyone with a health ar story contacts their congressman & senators. Maybe then more will recognize how big the problems really are!

2. I got a do-over...
Originally, my COBRA was $435/mo, but after a few months, I couldn't afford that so I went uninsured for a few months. Then I got a temp job and they offered insurance. When I couldn't find any more temp work (seriously!), I went back on COBRA, and stipped down to the bare minimum with no dental or vision.

3. Years ago, bare bones COBRA would have cost me over $600 a month.
Unemployment benefits I received were $680 a month. Rent was $420. No COBRA for me during that period of time.

4. Fortunate is a funny way to describe my situation...
But I suppose that I am fortunate that I've only been hospitalized twice and have only gone bankrupt once. That said, my $145/mo doesn't cover my preexisting condition. So in the sense that I haven't had a health related crisis since I was laid-off, I suppose I am fortunate.
