Sleepless in Ohio
I go to bed with worry and wake all hours of the morning with the same set of thoughts.
I still have a house and bed to sleep in......still able to make my bills for now but can't stop thinking about the people and close friends here losing everything.
I am so tired of living this repeated waking.
Then to open my emails and have some ridiculous republican (girlfriends husband) with nothing but self-serving selfish comments nearly takes me to the brink.
I get up with a bad attitude and want to last out at anyone who even mentions the current situation. Our local paper just filled with freeper comments about Delphi pension loss.
My fellow D.U.er and life long friend JohnnyRingo is about to lose most of his pension from Delphi and I have never felt more helpless in my entire life.
He has always been the strong and positive when I ensued his help. Now it is him living his life like a bad cliff-hanger for now. He was a hard worker his entire life and we helped one another through really ruff times caring for his father then my mother day in day out. Seems his retirement ran out before he even got a chance to enjoy it. Yesterday when talking with him
I could sence his fear when he said its finally hit us.
It's like a bad bad dream.......then I wake only to realize it's not a dream.

1. I understand... Denial is my only saving grace...
We're in this together...but I've never felt so pessimistic.

4. I understand...
I have been unemployed for more then a year now here in Ohio. Shortly after I was laid off from ODJFS in budget cuts, I lost everything in a fire. The last year has been spent trying to find a job... stay out of debt so that prospective employment does not refuse me work because I have bad credit... Argue with the insurance company to get my money so I can start to replace what I lost in the fire (ongoing)... I have developed health issues that I can not get taken care of because I have no insurance, a hernia and something with my elbow... don't know what but it hurts.

I drink to much... I have developed a very short temper... I have developed an extremely foul mouth... I am very angry most of the time... I don't sleep much... maybe three hours at a time, then twenty awake...

Soon I am leaving though, moving to MA to stay with some old friends. I will be glad to leave Ohio.

6. Best of Luck to you
Joe I hope somehow your leaving brings you some good turns. Ohio is just so depressing right now I can't seem to find happiness about anything. I hope your move is positive.

I hope moving and staying with old friends makes all the difference for you.

I wish I could do the same.

7. My morning started bad...
I go on the patio and have a smoke....my morning doves were on the ground feeding and I sat and wished that sometimes we were like the birds and our only worry was to find what was provided for us with our love at our side. Surely that would be better than having to worry about how to pay for our survival. Then all of a sudden a large black crow scooped down and before I could jump from my chair he attacked one of the doves before my very eyes..........killed her and my backyard full of feathers. In a matter of seconds my pair was separated for the rest of their lives. Life isn't even fair for birds........the large prey just wait to eat you alive.
I'm going back to bed........this is not a good start to my day!!!!!!! I couldn't stop it ...........my backyard looks like a mattress. (I'm so fucken sad)

8. Welcome to my world...
I got laid off in June, 2007. I worked at my job for 20 years. I'm on a temp job now, as I was last summer. The rest of the time, I applied for jobs and spent away my life savings, as well as monetary gifts/loans from family. My temp job is over at the end of September. Nothing else in sight. I will probably wind up selling this place (hopefully) and moving back in with my parents at age 48. I can count on one hand the number of nights over the last 2 years where I didn't wake up at least once. No health insurance, so I can't see a doctor about getting a prescription for a sleep aid.

People know better not to send me idiotic republican-style comments. Those that did it once learn never to do it again. I make sure to set them straight.

9. I hear you. My family has not been too badly affected by the economy but we see it all around us.
It is heartbreaking to see good people being hurt through no fault of their own and then to see the casual indifference from right wingers and even some people on the left. I too get those hateful emails and am amazed at the complete lack of empathy for the suffering of others. Obscene wealth obtained through immoral behavior is to be admired and people who are the victims of corporate malfeasance are looked down upon by way too many people. (Woo hoo! Goldman made record profits!) I keep hoping that things will get better but how do people recoup what they have already lost?

My husband and I just yesterday were talking about people who used to be friends who we will no longer see because of their heartless and selfish attitudes. It seems as thought the right wing has made it socially acceptable to be a selfish cold bastard who cares about nothing yourself.

11. I'm with you on the anger.
So many wingers that are against their own economic self interest down here. Still it is better than most of Michigan, where I moved from. All I can say is, if able, get out and walk. I take longer and longer walks every day and it seems to help my sanity. I focus on the interesting and good people I meet. There are many out there and many turn out to be a surprise.

Not much else to say. If there is any comfort, millions of people struggle with the same alienation, disappointment and fear that you have. Meditating does help me with sleep when I am stressed though.

18. I hear ya! I'm in Ohio okay for now but when my unemployment runs out I'm screwed.

Maybe we should pool our money and buy a commune.
