The NC GOP has name-jacked the NC State Senate. The NC Senate Republican Caucus is rolling out an online media campaign begun in January by consultant & executive director Jim Blaine. Using at least 4 domain names combined with Twitter & YouTube accounts the NC GOP has created a partisan cul-de-sac for unsuspecting web surfers looking for legitimate information about the NC State Senate.
The domain names ncstatesenate.com, ncstatesenate.org, ncstatesenators.com and myncsenate.com all direct to the same website. These 4 domains are registered variously to Jim Blaine and Linda Daves and share 2 IP addresses. The site is partisan with no general information about the legislative body. The site does not even provide a link through to the real NC State Senate site nor does it provide a disclaimer that it is not an official State website.
The only contact information on the site is for the NC GOP and for Republican State Senator Phil Berger. It includes his official state telephone number and state email address and includes a contribution button. Berger's fan page on Facebook contains links to ncstatesenate.com.
The NC GOP made much of the alleged Twitter-jacking of legislator Skip Stam's name but apparently has no qualms about its own name-jacking of an entire legislative body. The MyNCSenate account on Twitter lists the ncstatesenate.com domain name as its website and has a corresponding MyNCSenate YouTube account.
It is not apparent that any established law is being broken but it sure looks as if ethical boundaries are being stretched way past their elastic limits. Active links to these sites have not been provided in this post to reduce the flow of "Google juice". Legitimate information about the NC State Senate can be found at ncleg.net.
