This is a serious question about Harry Reid
What is the real reason for his obsession on getting a 60 majority vote on health care (and other bills)? I don't understand how it benefits anybody (we the people or the Senate). Please somebody explain it to me!!

1. It's an excuse. It means nothing. That's all I can figure. He said
his responsibility was to the Senate, not the country.

4. but what does it signify if he gets the 60?
It really doesn't MEAN anything in reality, but it obviously does to him. I just don't get it..

8. He's saying it means something when it doesn't mean anything.
That's what an excuse is. It's an air filler. We're supposed to go, "Oh, I see." Bullshit is a better word for it, I guess.

2. He's numbers focused, not content focused
is what that says to me.

For me, that's odd. Yay us. :-(

3. Its a means to allowing the Blue Dogs & the GOP to hold power
Has Reid ever been a progressive?

5. Precisely
This could be accomplished on a 50 +1 vote through reconciliation.

7. It Means That He is no Different...
than any other politician. That thought that he would pass anything without a single Republican vote and he would stand to catch all of the blame if it failed miserably terrifies him.

Says alot to me about Reid's resolve on anything. But then, I feel the same way about all of the wishy washy members of Congress. Half of them need to commit Hara Kiri and the other half need to be put on notice that the same is expected of them if they keep fucking up.

12. It seems so. He wants some magic # instead of doing his job of LEADING
A little less talk and a lot more action, if you please, Senator Reid.

10. Reid is a lying corporate whore.
Parsing his statements for their "meaning" is a fruitless enterprise, he wants to protect the people that have bought him. That is all there is.

11. Serious answer: Reid is a DLC member
and DLC will always favor corporations over the average Joe.

13. I agree with a DU post that said one ought never trust
a "Democrat" from such a red state. He functions as something other than a Democrat.

14. you're missing the point.
Reid isn't interested in getting a health care bill passed. If the Democrats outnumbered the Republicans 99 to 1 in the Senate, Reid would claim we need unanimous consent before any health care vote is passed.
