Press conference from Rutgers - with the KIDS Imus insulted - now on CNN
Some here forgot this was a personal attack on some kids, not an abstract "culture" event.

1. Well, it was a personal attack on adults, but it was personal nonetheless. n/t

2. Exactly. People say they oppose racism, but some seem to only oppose it in some abstract

philosophical way, not in real life. Imus launched a racist, sexist attack against a group of student athletes at the pinnacle of their achievement, for no other reason than because of the way they looked and because he figured he could get away with it under the guise of being Imus.

And a stunning number of DUers are telling the kids that Imus was okay to do so.

Sad that the team even has to respond to this. In a decent country, Imus goes bye-bye for his racist, sexist attack, and the teens get told "We're sorry. You didn't deserve that."

3. I feel so bad for the girls. IMUS is such a PIG for saying what he said.
The Coach is speaking now. C. Vivian Stringer

5 of the girls are freshman. :(

The girls have an average of a 3.5 grade average.

4. All attacks are personal and cultural.
How do we change the culture so that personal attacks like this are not acceptable is the question.

5. KIDS?!!
While not nearly as offensive as what Imus said, using the word "kids" to describe the young WOMEN at Rutgers is VERY DEMEANING.

6. Not if someone is, say, 60 or 70 years old, eh?
I'm only 40 but have a 19 year-old daughter and I call her and her friends kids.

Never heard a basketball announcer refer to players as kids? I have. Pretty much every freakin' game!

13. Given we keep referring to the troops and marines as "kids"
which is extremely ironic, given how many of those deployed are in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and even older.....I'd say that is a bigger transgression...

9. Someone tell the coach to shut up.
Im done listening to her. She made good points, but she is now rambling and seems to want to ramble till the next season opener.

I would love to hear from the girls or from the press.

I hope he hangs his head in shame forever for this.

16. "These women are the antithesis of what IMUS portrayed"
I'm going to get flamed but frankly I don't care...

"These women are the antithesis of what IMUS portrayed"

OK...so um--does that mean that Rutgers thinks that somewhere there are indeed
"nappy headed hos" but it just isn't these young women?

Help me out here, is it just me?

I don't think being an athlete and being a college student should matter a damn regarding what Imanass said...NO ONE, black, or white, should be called a "nappy headed ho" on television by some random commentator.

Maybe if we all want to argue on DU we should not just limit the arguments to race and start having a discourse on the CLASS discrimination in this country, because this press conference is striking me as almost as inappropriate as the remarks of IMUS.

I am glad that these PARTICULAR women have accomplished good things, and that they have had enough where with all to get into an esteemed college, but I don't think they're being "The Best this nation has to offer" (as I have just heard mentioned by the speaker) is relevant to anything!

EVERYONE in this country has worth, regardless of whether they are privileged,
or are "God's representatives" or not (as the speaker also just coined them--what's up with the religious bent anyway?)

And we wonder why teenagers are beating up the homeless on our streets?

You apparently have to rate, to have *worth* in this twisted society of late.

The question should not be whether these girls were what Imus claimed they were, it should have been about the inappropriatness of attacking people based on gender and race.

Oh well whatever!
