So, I'm going to be on NPR's "Morning Edition" tomorrow
Talking about my two mystery novels set in Provincetown, Mass (HIGH SEASON and MATING SEASON). It's a recurring feature they do called "Crime In the City." Taped on location in P'town--interviewed by Linda Wertheimer. Six hours of interview distilled into a six-minute piece--God only knows what I said to Ms. Wertheimer; I hope they'll be kind and not let me come off as too much of a jackass!

I just moved here in March. Those whales are so graceful, I was amazed. So much we don't know about life on our beautiful earth.

I didn't get to see the show, can it be seen online?

That's great publicity, and I hope your sales rocket right up off the charts, breaking records. And you'll be surprised at how brilliant and witty you are when you hear yourself. Of that I am certain. Those editors are kind, and you're smarter than you think.

Congratulations!!!

I wouldn't worry. I've never heard LW do a bad program. If she didn't think she had good stuff, she'd have stayed with it even longer or come back.

Edited on Mon Jul-27-09 08:50 AM by Patiod
NPR offers a subscription service ("NPR Books") that allows you to download just their book reviews, and the "Crime in the City" series is part of the service.

So all of us who missed it, and those who woluld like to hear it again, should be able t get this on our MP3 player shortly

edit: Will be checking out the book itself, too - I'm a murder mystery enthusiast, and always looking for a new series. Love the "Crime in the City" series. Can't believe there's a mystery writer in our midst! :hi:

34. Slight change of plan--
Looks like NPR did a last-minute reschedule and decided to run the piece on Thursday, 7/30. Nice because it caps off the series--bummer because they didn't tell me until my publicist called them up this a.m. in a panic.

37. A-Ha! I admit I was confused when I checked the site...
in the wee hours and Baldacci's interview was all over the place. And he was indeed on this AM.

I listen almost every day, so I'll catch it on Thursday. And, as I said before, NPR loves the arts and novelists rate high there, so when they agree to do you, they like you and it's almost always a puff piece. Maybe not Oprah, but it should do you good.

(OTOH, if it took 6 hours to get 6 minutes of good stuff from you...)

39. Keep at it.
Suspense is a tricky novel form that generally takes a couple of tries to perfect; you really have to have almost perfect control of pacing to pull it off, and hardly anyone gets it right the first time out. Concentrate on character, too--readers like sympathetic protagonists, nasty bad guys and a compelling love interest. Remember to throw in a good double-cross or two just to keep things lively. If I was writing suspense, I'd go back and watch all the old Hitchcock films--it's basically a cinematic form, and he was a master.
